Epson 4490 on home mode for quickie scans, FED-2, Industar-26, Arista Premium 400, D76 1:1.

Sunrise and reflected glare-rise:

A few scans from professional mode, 8-bit grayscale, 1200 dpi, unsharpmask in pp:

Many of these shots were at f2.8, 1/125 or 1/250 ...

dmax look okay. how about to you?

Interesting results, Paul. Do you have any details on the scanner settings or the post processing?

#1 seems a bit odd to me, because the upper right appears overexposed, yet is not especially bright in the scan (<200 for the grey value). I would probably adjust some settings or PP to get the result to be different, but that is just me. Wink How does the negative look for this one?

#2 actually seems to be the opposite - having a nice range of values all the way from 0 to 255...perhaps suggesting that it was auto-adjusted by the scanner or in post processing? This is a great shot, and seems to be an excellent test image for the scanner.

How do the scans look at 100%?

I like 2 and 3, very nice first results! Now shoot some medium format. Wink

Thanks, guys.
I remember that first shot having a very bright patch of sun on the ground. I did a little PP to bring down the brightness of it.
The scans were quickies done on home mode in jpeg format. I am just trying to get a feel for the mechanics. I am REALLY happy with how the tried and true D76 at 68F/20C brings out good mid-tones, opens up shade and doesn't let the highlights get too high, and mixes nicely with the auto setting. That I-26 with its ancient coating does pretty well in near-direct sun.
I will re-scan my bests in professional mode, probably 16-bit grayscale, 2400 ...

I added a few shots above, rescanned in professional mode, 8-bit grayscale, 1200 dpi ...

I'd go with 16-bit greyscale and 2400dpi next time around.

Here are three more in 8/1200:

Now I will turn around and run the same three 16/24:

Interesting, I like the contrast in the 8/12 (shadow tree shot) but you have
more details and tonality with the 16/24 version of same shot. I can see
where using 8-bit greyscale would be of benefit in some shots.

Bill, I added that contrast on the 8-bit copy. Confused The 16-bit copy is untouched except for unsharp mask and sizing ...

Here is one more 16-bit shot with some PP to tone down the highlights in the upper right corner (really varied lighting in this simple photo):

That I-26 is pretty stinking sharp, and ol' shaky hands is getting a better grip these days ... Very Happy

Nice detail in the last, I always use 16-bit for BW and 48-bit for color when
scanning.

Thanks.

Shocked Shocked Great abstract. I was looking at it over and over again.

Take a look at Vuescan. Works very nice with the Epson.

Great series Paul and so much better results than Walmart scans you previously posted. Plus the lack of blue/purple cast.

Thank you, Martin.
