I've been waiting for this one for a LONG time.

It is very unfortunate that the starting price is 3x the price that the new SD14s were at a while back... I think Sigma has set the price high enough that many with SD14s will not be upgrading, and many who had planned to buy the SD15 can no longer justify it against the competition. Neutral

It also seems as though they have missed many opportunities. For example, the TRUE-II based DP-series cameras have both live-view and video capabilities. Since the DP-series cameras use the same sensor and processing engine, there are no technical reasons why these features could not be put into the SD15. In fact, it would seem like it would be less work to keep them, and more work to remove them! Confused

Apart from SD cards, a bigger screen and different algorithms it doesn't seem to be a great leap from the SD14.

I can see them languishing unsold for months then being remaindered out, just like the SD14.
It seems it's using the same sensor, am I right?
If so, have they run into an obstacle there, I wonder. For the price they're charging, to lure buyers, I'd expect a bigger pixel count (cue arguments for and against).

Their DSLR development progress in slow. If the other brand is starting the production of a similar non-Bayer filter, they may have to close their entire DSLR production line.

well, main problem with sigma isnt body or electronics, its only foveon x3 itsefl. for many years now, has same resolution and sstuffs like analog frontend cant make body as better, as is neccesary. i would love to switch to sigma, but 1,7crop and foveon with very low native iso makes sigma bodies useless for many situations (because i dont like flash). so i still use bayer-dslr plus 35mm film bodies.

and those samples doesnt look very good. for DP2 sigma has much better collection.

I don't think it was intended to be a great leap... but it should have been a definite & worthwhile refinement. Especially in terms of the operational characteristics - speed, stability, and battery life.

The problem is that these improvements really just bring the SD15 to where the SD14 needed to be two years ago... and in the process, they failed to leverage the benefits from the TRUE-II and the DP-series R&D efforts, that could have brought the SD15 up to more competitive specifications for 2010. Sad

Foveon lost the race a while ago and Sigma jumped on their "stalled" bandwagon. Great shame because the original concept and execution had promise. SD15 is, I suspect, a final gasp.

I agree with you: Not a signifiant leap forward.
I expected (at least) to have zoomed live-view to help in focusing...
At that price I'll stick to my SD9/SD10 for long.

Regards.
