I have a 4th generation, serial# 17551258, fixed Nikon base, and a nice bit of work it is, too. I force-fit it onto my Pentax K20D with no problem, but I am thinking of grinding qway the lower 1mm or so of the aperture ring, for a better fit. I got it about 2 years ago with a batch of other Nikon glass -- it cost an entire US$9, including shipping. But I've just recently started using Nikon glass on my Pentax, so I haven't yet done a shootout against my SMC-M 28/2.8. _________________ Too many film+digi cams+lenses, oh my -- Pentax K20D, K-1000, M42s, more

Walter, I've been trying to decode Soligor serials off and on for years. How did you arrive at your conclusion? The lens attributed to Sun is a connection I've never thought of.
Is it possible that...
H = Komine
1 = Tokina
2 = Sun
...and the next two are year of manufacture?
Great thread!

I'm interested in both Sun lenses, and Soligor lenses, besides others. This is a pet project. I read every post that comes up on Soligor or Sun on multiple forums. I also read the old posts, and study lenses that are posted on Ebay.
First H is not Komine. I have a H code lens that is definately not made by Komine.
I don't know what the H means, but it was used by Soligor, Vemar, and Sun. I have seen examples of each.
1= Tokina. That is very possible. The popular opinion is it was a 2 digit code. 16 and 17. I will do more reaserch to try to prove or disprove it.
2= Sun, again possible. More reaserch required.
About the year of man. Dosen't work out on the lenses I own. But whether they changed dating methods thru production is possible.
They did use some 2 digit codes. I'm sure 38 is one of the Sun Codes. _________________

Thanks Mo. I see now the Tokinas do have T4 mounts not Vivitar's TX.
I think casualcollector has the manufacturer and date coding scheme Soligor used.
We need a 170xxxxx lens to see if Tokina changed, including optics given the different close focus distances, the design in 1970 or 1971 which persisted until 1976, the same year manufacturer switched to Sun.
Should be interesting to see differences in performance between the two Tokina versions!
More confirmation of the coding scheme, I also have 2.8/35 serial 171xxxxx, and 2.8/24 serial 172xxxxx, both with T4-mount. These Soligor serial numbers indicate both are Tokinas, from 1971 and 1972 respectively.
Further investigation shows the same serial coding on some Soligor T4 Zooms. I'll show these in another thread later.
@walter g -- my Vemar presets 2.8/35 and 4.5/200 both have serial numbers beginning with 'H'. None of my Suns. _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

2 = Sun
3 = Sun
6 = Komine
H6 = Komine

There does appear to be at least a sixth version. In this thread 3rd post serial #173xxxxx with 58mm filter size has a fixed mount. |
Indeed, there is one style which seems to "jump" the serial number sequence. From the post you linked:

... and here is mine, which was originally a fixed Canon FL mount:
The construction of these lenses appears to be identical to your #2 (168 serial number prefix), but mine is a 171xxxxx, and Kathmandu's is a 173xxxxx. So by SN, our two lenses would seem to fit on both sides of your fourth lens (171 SN prefix)? The "58mm" filter thread marking on the name ring is also present in both of these lenses, and starts in the fourth lens in your set, with lower SNs not having a marking.
The change from yellow to green for the "feet" scale on the focusing ring might also be a clue. Your 168 is yellow, my 171 is yellow, Kathmandu's 173 is green, mo's 176 is green, and Kathmandu's 276 is green. I can't quite make out the colors of your right three lenses - do they fit this trend? _________________ Sigma DP1, Nikon D40 (hers ), Polaroid x530, Pentax P30t, Pentax P50, (P30t/P50 K-A to Nikon F body mount conversion)

Lovely work on Soligor codes. 17 definetly Tokina.
Here is my addition:
Sadly i have misplaced my Tokinas - they are just like first 8 from the left (27... excluded). Then there are similar models on right. Porst the same as Berolina (though without Minolta stick). Yashikor, Upsilon, Sigma very similar.

Several years ago I saved images of Soligors from online auctions in the same pursuit as you. I have a file of about 250 images, almost all with serials. I have similar files for Vivitar and other brand lenses. I went back and reviewed them after my previous post. My revised opinions on the serials.
H = Tokina. It appears on many non Soligor lenses with Tokina characteristics.
16 = Tokina
17 = Tokina
27 = Sun
I'm going to back away from my statement that positions two and three are year of manufacture but not completely abandon it! _________________ In Search Of "R" Serial Soligors
