I have a couple of interesting medium and large format lenses (Pentac 8 inch f/2.9, Aerostigmat 305mm f/5, Deltamar 70mm f1.6) I'd like to use on a DSLR. I could of course mount them directly, but then I wouldn't take advantage of the large image circle and the resulting limited depth of field.
Video enthousiasts have been using 35mm DoF adapters for a long time. This allows 35mm format lenses to be used with small sensor video cameras, allowing narrow depth of field. The lens projects an image onto a ground glass and this image is filmed.
Has anybody tried something similar for large format lenses and DSLRs? I imagine the construction to be large and the image quality reduced because of the ground glass, but could it be/has it been done? |

I'm thinking of making a medium format dof adapter for video, since everybody is using 35mm format on 5d now, this could make advantage in sensor size, but I'm just still collecting informations _________________ I use: Flektogon 2.8/20, Flektogon 2.8/35, planar 50mm/1.4, Takumar 1.4/50mm, Takumar 1.9/85, MIR 24H, Mir1v, Industar-50-2, Helios-44-2, Pentacon 2.8/135, cyclop 85 1.5 |

I have a thought doing DOF adapter with medium format lens too. It will give you an advantage of large ground glass. I have made 35mm DOF adapter for my camcorder. With my bronica ETRSI lenses I believe I will get larger projected image. But it need a grinding process to get larger ground glass.
Using medium format lens on fullframe DSLR is like using 35mm lens on 1,6 crop sensor. It`ll croppes. IMHO. _________________ Canon 500d, Contax 139 Quartz, Nikon FM2n, Nikon F3Hp, Minox 35 ML, Leica Minizoom, Contax TVS, Bronica ETRS-i

Easiest for me would be make a light-tight box to hold 5D2 with 4/50 Macro-Takumar focused on Pentax 6x7 ground glass; images capture 49x69mm of the ground glass. Similar setup for LF lens & camera.
Designing a custom 2:3 adapter to utilize the entire 6x7 lens image circle only gains a few mm on the ground glass. Ground glass inside 100mm diameter tube about 110mm long, 6x7 mount on one end, filter threads on the other. (84.95mm 6x7 camera register + 25.4mm extension) 7" tube diameter for 4x5 lens; 15" diameter for 8x12 lens ( ).
On my long list of things to try someday...
