I couldn't see any post about this here, didn't look too hard...

Quote:
Samyang Optics, the Korean manufacturer of industrial optics and photographic lenses has announced a 14mm F2.8 IF ED MC Aspherical super wide-angle lens. It is designed for full-frame cameras, but works with APS-C cameras as well. It features two ED and two hybrid aspherical lens elements. The lens offers an impressive 114° field of view on full frame cameras and 92.5° on APS-C cameras. It will be available from November 2009 in Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax mounts.
...
Samyang 14mm f2.8 IF ED MC Aspherical will be released in late November for a suggested retail price of €259.

I predict that this lens will sell like hot cakes (as American members would say)
I guess everyone in this forum will get one. I will for sure take one. Even those who already have more expensive alternatives, will buy one for travels where it would be risky to take megabucks lenses.

For Canon price differs eight times! Ok, AF, USM, but 8x ...
Who needs AF anyway? ;]

Pity that they don't make it with a M42 mount.

But yes, it's a nice one for the Canon.

I'm sure they make other mounts also (Nikon, Pentax K..)

Minimum focusing distance 28 cm. Is that from film plane? Lens 10 cm + register distance 4 cm. If the subject is 14 cm from front element, you get really interesting pictures at 14 mm. Smile

That's great ... but I would want to use it on my M42 camera too Smile

It might be relatively simple to replace the mount with M42, if you can get a spare mount to use… It's likely that the versions of different systems are identical apart from the mount piece, so it's likely designed to be easily interchangeable with different ones.

I hope to get mine on Monday.
Some readers in German photo boards have asked for fast picture upload, and so i have prepared a German site for that:
http://www.4photos.de/test/Samyang-14mm-2.8.html

At the moment there is nearly nothing to see there - please wait till Monday 19:00 GMT - I hope I could upload first images (with full sized JPEGs) till then.
I have to work, and to play with my child till she sleeps.

So, today I have made some pictures (had to go to work too, and to the doctor with my child). And now some of the pictures are online:
http://www.4photos.de/test/Samyang-14mm-2.8.html

My lens has a bad flange back adjustment. At infinity my lens distance scale shows ~ 0.8 meters. At the infinity setting the focus is far behind infinity.
But it performs more or less well - for me.
The distortion is very bad for everyone who wants to shoot architecture with straight lines even on image borders.
The image sharpness is not very high on the edges.

The Samyang distortion is now in the PTLens database (no new version number). So a correction is more or less possible.

Is this with the old design (released in September 2009) or the new design which is supposed to be released in May 2010?

Besides a coating difference, they have very different optical formulae.

The new version seems to be appearing at retailers now; a large Finnish electronics shop publishes the number of items in their inventory, and they appear to have received 3 Canon versions and 2 Nikon versions of this lens today (but both mounts have several times that number of pre-orders on them). No Sony or Pentax versions yet… But no-one has pre-ordered a Pentax version, and I'm the only one to pre-order a Sony version; I'm not sure if I'll actually buy it when it arrives, though. The distortion looks quite bad with this lens…

I suppose my lens is the new version.
It was announced that it will be shipped May on the auction site.
Furthermore I have the opinion that my lens is very good flare resistant, and I think that flares are a problem in the first version.

I am torn between "I must have this lens" and "No way, I don't need it".
Some of the images that ZoneV shows on his website make me think: "Wow! That's what I have been looking for!" but then the distortion in other shots is really terrible. Then again, if PTlens can correct it...

As I said "torn between"...

I think the price is what makes the decision difficult.

Even if you factor in the purchase of a copy of DxO Optics Pro, it still comes in at under a third of the cost of the competition...

If this was an expensive lens, it would be easy to look at the flaws and say that it was not worth it. But at this price, it isn't so clear. Wink

Exactly so; if it was even €100 more I would not consider it, but now any serious full-frame alternatives for a lens that wide are considerably more expensive… I already have a 19mm prime and a 17-35mm zoom, but I do miss the widest end of the Sigma 10-20mm.
