Some weeks ago I found an Argus Coated Cintar 3.5/50 for next to nothing and I thought it would be a nice lens to play with on the NEX.

It's the lens of the classic Argus C3.

Today I finally found some time to play around with it a little.
Since I did not find a perfectly fitting distance ring, I used an Olympsus 41-37 adapter which I once used for my C-3030 and a C-NEX-adapter.
This way the Cintar is only good for close-ups.

The set-up looks like this:

Example images follow...

OK, here are some images taken in our garden.

100% crop

But pretty good even for near focus only. You did not have to crop the images
I suppose, since at close up the most of lens increase its image circle.

Looks really good. I have the long lens (Tele Sandmar 4,5/100) made by Enna Werk München. quite sharp lens too. I have tried it on the Nex placing it on top of the the M42 adapter.

Do you know if the 50mm and the 35mm lenses were made in Germany too?

If I find a way to built an adapter with the right register distance, I neither will have to crop, since the Argus was/is a 36x24mm camera. Wink

Have you been able to figure out the correct register distance of the Argus cam?

I think a little bit shorter than M42.
According to Google 44.45mm

Stefan, our colleague Greg answered this some time ago:

Funny you should ask, as I just received a C3 of my own just 15 minutes ago. Very Happy Mine dates from approximately 1953, and the 35/4.5 Sandmar is marked "Enna-Werk München, U.S. Zone, Germany"., and the 50/3.5 is marked "Argus Coated Cintar, Made in U.S.A.".

That being said, there were several manufacturers making Argus-fit lenses, and several variations of the Argus-branded lenses... See here for a good reference:

Carsten:

I also got an ARGUS C3 long ago and would like to try the lens on the NEX.
I've seen in the Greg's thread that the register distance is 41mm, so I would start from adapting an Hexanon adapter (40,5mm) that should not be difficult to add this spare 0,5mm and put the Cintar on top.

Regards.

Jes.

Thanks a lot, Jes!
Yes, I have forgotten about that thread. Thanks for linking it here!

That means that my adapter keeps the lens for about 9mm too far away which accounts for the limitation to close-ups.

It's 17.7mm not 41mm.

It makes a lot of sense, it's a rangefinder so the RD should be in the same range of similar cams Sad
Thanks for pointing it out!.

it should not be that close - otherwise how come my 100mm lens worked n top of a m42 adapter.
I guess the register is very close to m42 register - so around 44mm.

That turns back the question to the 41mm... How can we know?.

Richard Oleson measured it in the past as 42.2mm: (look down in the thread).

So we're back to the original idea of mechanising an Hexanon adapter (40.5mm).

I got my info from this site. Perhaps it's for a different argus lens?

sorry if I've caused confusion

Don't worry, many thanks for trying to help. I'll measure it by myself (if I can find my C3 in the "archive")
Comparing to the Sony E that is 18mm, the Argus C3 is a lot thicker, so probably the figures from Rick Oleson are right.
