Thought this might be an interesting survey. Very Happy

My better half's D40 was purchased used with 4,253 clicks on the shutter. Six months in, it's at 24,460. Shocked At this rate, based on the survey results at http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/nikon_d40.htm (average failure at 114,923.4 actuations), we have a little over two years of life left. Wink

How many actuations are on your DSLR's shutter? Question

PostPosted: Tue May 25, 2010 5:43 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

average mean some shutter fail at 20000 others at 200000
my previous car could made 100000km but my wife crash it at 30000
don't stress, use your tool, if it break, take another

I have a Nikon D70 with 260 000 shutter actuations. No service so far.

I had a Nikon D2x with 190 000 shutter actuations, new owner says it now has 380 000 shutter actuations and still no service needed.

I have a Nikon D3 with 120 000 shutter actuations, and the factory warranty covers 500 000 shutter actuations.

Shutter goes boom at 50k is a relic of the past, modern DSLRs are very good and can handle hundreds of thousands of photos.

Oh yeah, not worried at all. Cool I don't buy gear as investments, and at the price we paid, it's already paid for itself. Cool

I sold my 350D with a shutter count of about 18.000 - never had any problems.

My 40D now has about 9.000, no problem at all.

My 5D is a used one, I estimate the shutter clicks at about 26.000 - 30.000. It works like a charm.

Now, these are impressive numbers that sound really good. Wink

A lot of photographers with DSLRS spray and prey. Laughing

Yeah, there are a number of ways to rip through the shots quickly. For example, the D40 doesn't have metering for manual lenses, so the only option is to guess for the first shot, check the histogram, make adjustments, and shoot again. Wink

Panoramas, HDR, bracketed focus/exposure, time-lapse, etc are also good ways to end up taking a LOT of pictures when the end result "condenses" into very few. Cool

You might consider a look at my portfolio if you think high shutter count equals low photographic skills Rolling Eyes

Some of us shoot photos for a living, including photojournalism of sports like handball, icehockey, football, bandy - in Scandinavian winter "light" or indoors. A typical wedding afternoon and I shoot about 1000 photos, of which I delete maybe 50% and pick 80-100 for the wedding book. Take that times about 200 working days per year and you will see why camera manufacturers make pro DSLR shutter warranties for 500 000 shutter actuations.

Never pointed anyone out...just saying.

When ever I shoot people I always do a burst of 3-4 frames. There's always someone blinking. Laughing

I have no idea, and I don't really care.

Both my Canon 20D and 5D are working great.

canon 350D, shutter expired after about 53k clicks

7D is at about 2500 - at this rate, it should last 10yrs for me(if the mtbf is indeed 150k)

Yes.
Depending on the Canon camera model, there's a free utility HERE.

Works great for my 40D, worked great for my former 400D.
Other camera models supported; read the documentation to find out which.

I sold my E-520 with approx. 7500 clicks.

Bought an E-3 with approx. 17000 clicks and it now has around 24000 clicks.

My DMC-L1 has around 3400 clicks.

Last but not least, my E-510, which is now "borrowed" to my sister has approx. 12000 clicks.

My 450D is only 8 months old now, so it has about 3000 clicks. I don't intend on getting a new body any time soon so I hope it'll withstand a lot of actuations. Laughing

My old p&s (Powershot A700) is now around 11k clicks and still works ok.

PostPosted: Tue Jun 08, 2010 10:17 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

My 450d, about 18 months old, has exactly 11804 clicks and works perfectly.

My Nikon D40 has 16,000 actuations and I've never had a problem with it ... yet Smile
