my elderly spiratone 28/2.8 - quite close focusing - is very good despite diminishing coatings, but it looks like andre the giant on my tiny st605.

nominations, please?

The Takumar 3.5 in any variant is exceptional, but you do have the 3.5 maximum aperture...

If you do not mind 30mm
I would say pentacon 30mm 3.5 Lydith. Has ten blades, very sharp

Tokina 28mm 2.8, compact, but no A/M switch (not needed for the Fujica)

Vivitar 28/2.8 with the 28xxxxx serial number, or Tamron Adaptall 2 28/2.5.

interesting suggestions. the takumar 28/3.5 is all over ebay, $50-$100, but i'd rather have more light by which to focus ... Cool

My vote for the 28/3.5 SMC Takumar as well, I have a friend who uses it to create some amazing heavy metal band promo photos.

Though I have no direct experience, and the prices may be a bit high for you...

the silver Yashinon, if it is anything like the 35mm, should be excellent:

The Hoya has a good rep and I read some glowing review in Pop/Modern photo when they were released... Tho, I'm not sure I recall if this one was one of the reviewed lenses, I do know the 135 results beat Takumar

Ensinor/Clubman 2.8/24mm. It's got good close focus ability too.

If budget permits, Takumar!

Sigma Mini-Wide Macro 28/2.8 is pretty good.

S-M-C Takumar 3.5/28mm. Probably the best M42 28mm lens.

There are several votes for this lens - mine included. Don't let the 3.5 aperture hold you back, it's not horrible Laughing And with some careful shopping you can get one for $40 or so. Just ride the ebay waves...

You wont get a better 28mm than the C/Y mount Carl Zeiss 28mm f2.8 Distagon T* and yet supprsingly they often sell for M42 lens prices.
Its a very light and compact lens and its possible to convert one to M42 mount. Wink

I'm searching for a good/cheap wide in M42 also. I could do Nikkor mount too.

My old NIPPON NIKKOR-H AUTO 3.5 28MM has the worst CA I've ever seen.
Not to go off topic... but... any thoughts on the Nikkor 24mm 2.8?

Tamron 2.5/28 Adaptall 2
very compact, very sharp once stopped down. At full aperture it vignettes visibly.

That's three votes for the Tamron 28/2.5... Is the f/2.5 lens smaller (or better) than the f/2.8?

I have the Tamron 28/2.8, and it is noticeably more compact than my other 28mm lenses. The Tamron is the lens on the left:

My Adaptall 2 28/2.5 is noticably sharper than my Adaptall 28/2.8. It's also a touch smaller Smile

Hmm, I might have to look for one of those now. Very Happy

Would you mind taking a picture of the two side-by-side?

I'd say it was smaller and a bit better, I have both and the f/2.5 seems to be sharper, especially at larger apertures.

Kiron 24/2.0 or 28/2.0
