Does anyone know of any resources for knowing the true coverage of lenses - beyond just their intended format?
In particular, I'm interested in this from the perspective of DIY camera building, where the shape, size, and aspect ratio of the film/paper/plate are arbitrary. I also would not be type specific - the lenses could be SLR, rangefinder, enlarger, bellows, folder, view-camera, or any other type of lens.
I've done some informal testing of some of my SLR lenses, and have found that some are quite restricted (such as my 19/3.8 Vivitar, which barely covers a 24x36mm frame), and others are quite generous (such as my 35/3.5 Soligor or 50/1.8E Nikon, which both have image circles that are about 60mm in diameter, or my 135/3.5 Steinheil München, which has an image circle of about 80mm in diameter). These are quite surprising results, given that these lenses were all sold for the 24x36mm film format.
I'm hoping that a resource of some type might be available, so that I don't have to just arbitrarily buy and test lenses if I need a particular coverage.
