Don't forget that if you get one of these cameras and really don't like guessing distances you can always get a cheap flash-shoe mount rangefinder like the Lomo made Blik or Smena.

I got one for my Bessa 6x9 because I wanted to try closer up portraits at wider apertures.

Some of these models still sell reasonably cheap.

Some of these sell for US$10-20 per boxload. By the boxload, some of my fairly recent acquisitions cost like this (shipped):

Petri 7-S: US$6.50
Argus C3: US$3.00
Yashica GSN: $3.00
Minolta AL-F: US$5.90
Yashica Lynx 5000: $5.90

Oh, the VF's are usually even cheaper than the RF's. I have/had (sold some) a pile of better Kodak VF's (Auto35, Retinette, etc) that cost US$3-5 each. BTW my first serious cam was an ancient German 1934 Kodak Retina I, the first 135 camera. VF not RF, so I attained some mastery of guessing distances. [HINT: Pace off the distance to a subject, or visualize the number of paces.]

I had an old flash-shoe RF gizmo as you suggest, but it mostly just verified my estimates. That one is long gone. Another came my way not long ago, a Lomo I think -- it's stashed here somewhere. ;( But it is 100% WRONG. I mean, I read 10m for something that's 20m away. If I can find it, I'll ask about how to recalibrate it. Or was it made on a drunk day at the factory?

If you really want cheap, spontaneous, no-frills camera with a retro feel, there is one more totally different direction you can explore - Disposables! Very Happy

But not just any old disposable... instead, the Rollei "Assignment Camera" with Rollei Retro 400 black & white film. Cool

This isn't C-41 B&W, it is true B&W film for B&W chemistry. This means that you have a wide range of processing flexbility, particularly for developing it yourself. If you *really* want a vintage look, you can even try some of the "Caffenol" developing. Cool
