Hi folks!
I just got a Vivitar series 1 24-48 F3.8 OM mount and the aperture ring moves (I fell the clicks on the f stops) but the diaphragm does not close. Am I doing something wrong or is it broken?

Welcome!

You need to press 'ears' on mount to close blades.

I've done that, i've pushed the little metal thing... like i do on my other Manual lenses it don't close... maybe it's really broken...

I did a silly thing one day with an OM mount took it apart and underneath there is a spring that opens and close the aperture...I never fixed it but that may be your problem...the spring is loose/not connected?
I would not advise looking at the mount unless it is the last resort....I never found where the spring reattached Embarassed
Did you set your aperture to the smallest (F16.) then push the "ears"?Just asking the dumb questions as sometimes we forget to do the simple things first ( I have done this also Embarassed )

In this case 99% sure it is broken or require cleaning, it is stuck wide open.

OM lenses can stick open if the mount has been removed and the mechanism is "pinched" when it is re-installed... a quick test would be to just loosen (not remove) the screws for the mount, and then re-try the aperture ring and the button on the side.

I've just got one in FD mount which is stuck wide open even when attached to the camera. Is it possible to fix or get fixed as this is a lens I've been after for a while.

I can't help with the problem, but this lens is one of my favorites. It's big and heavy, but a great walkabout lens - it's worth getting fixed professionally if you can't do it yourself. Personally I would pay to have mine fixed, I like it that much.
