It would be nice if you take shoots with them and share information how they impact picture quality.

That is one part of the planned experiments on fungus for 2011 : I have 9 Tak 50/1.4 (S-M-C and SMC) with different infections (including a minty one with clean elements that will be used for reference). I also planned an experiment on the speed of the fungus development in clasical condition : leather case type stockage, wet environment. I alrdeay posted pictures with the 83/1.9, 50/1.2 Wink

Were you able to test the results from this mirror lens? I am also interested if you will be cleaning these, and doing before/after comparisons?

Seeing that 50/1.2 and the Taks, it almost hurt. Sad

What I'd like to know is, how successful you'll be at removing the fungus, especially with the more severe cases.

I was like "eh, it happens" until I got to the Pentax 50/1.2. Ouch.

I took some shots with the 500SP, and it clearly had worst performance than a clean copy of the lens...

I started to clean a Super Takumar 55/1.8 : no problems with it, I just have to reassemble it again. For most cases I will just have to unscrew the two optical groups (front and rear) Smile

What about coatings? They won't get washed?

fungus is contagious, so be careful to keep these infected lenses away from your other ones!! (this is the reason why ZEISS refuses to accept them even for service!)

Not sure I believe that to be honest, I've never experienced that. Suspect Zeiss don't want to be liable for coating damage endured whilst cleaning the fungus. Never know though!

The general consensus seems to be that fungus is not contagious. Fungus spores are everywhere, in everything.. it simply needs the right conditions to grow.

Never had a coating problem yet (the 55/1.8 is not the first lens I clean, only the first one to be totally disassembled).

That's it. There is more than 3 years that I have lenses with fungus, kept with other lenses, and I never had any fungal development at my home. You just need to cut at least one of the required conditions : humidity and darkness. I'm used to use silica to be sure that there is not enough humidity, and that works great Smile

+1 this is my four years experience too, I store separately fungus infected lenses some of them badly infected, some of them minimal , minimal infected ones not get worst under years.

Now I recently got started repairing and cleaning old lenses your fungus-pics make my hands itch.
But indeed, experimenting with them to see just what pics they can make in their fungy situation is also very interesting. Good luck !

"Ouch" to the pics.

"Great" to your project.

I don't know for sure if fungus is contagious or not, most experts say it is not really, I still would not store a fungus lens together with my "healthy" ones - just to be on the safe side. Wink

FYI: manufacturers don't "clean" fungus. They replace infested elements with new ones. Independent camera repair shops may attempt cleaning the glass, but I doubt it's cost-efficient for all but legacy lenses.
