Sony announces two new cameras, the A55 and A33. This pair are supposed to be the first Single Lens Translucent (SLT) digital cameras.

They uses pellicle mirror instead of rapid return mirror like those in SLR/DSLR.

SLT cameras offer live view with full-time fast phase-detection AF whether in stills or movie shooting. This is achieved by having a fixed, semi-transparent mirror that redirects a small amount of light onto the AF sensor while allowing the rest through onto the main imaging sensor.

Fastest APS-C shooting with 10fps for A55 and it is supposed to be the 1st camera that allows Quick AF Full HD movie shooting.

The 1965 Canon Pellix with its fixed pellicle mirror begs to differ. Wink

.. as does the '78 Nikon F2 H, the '89 Canon EOS RT, etc, etc. Wink

You are definitely correct. These are supposed to be a first for digital camera. Like all previous pellicle mirror type camera, some lights are loss. I just read another interesting comment from luminous-lanscape site, Sony will not officially comment on this.

(http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony-a55-preview.shtml About 2/3 through under "Dust and Light Loss").

if I understand correctly, they are the first that use this kind of mirror only for AF system and not for viewfinder.

infact they use an electronic viewfinder
