Hi

I have a set comprising a Nikon type Kenko variable 2x-3x extension tube / teleplus. The odd thing is that the lens in the tele part appears to be sprung loaded, and matches a hollow tube that runs down the centre of the extension tube. I suppose the extension is to give the extra magnification (from 2x to 3x) but what is the reason for the lens being sprung?

Any ideas folk?

Doug

Wild guess: Is it to avoid damage from a collision with the rear element of the lens?

Do you have a photo of it?

It seems to line up with the 'tube' on the extension adapter... and travels towards, not away from, the lens placed in front of it?

Very old system (1970/1971) sold for few tm : Nikon, Exacta and very few others (no canon, no olympus, no minolta..) i have a ad.. i will check later the availables other mounts

It was the only system ever sold wich could 2x and 3x

The sprung is certainly (i presume) to put the converter lens at the right position depending on the magnification

THANKS!

As the extension tube merely sits between the tele adapter and the camera I(and prsumably gives the extra magnification) I am not sure how a spring loaded lens would enhance matters though?

The magnification is due to the distance beetween the rear element and the magnifier lens
Longer the distance, bigger the magnification

Thanks, but I knew that! I mentioned it actually - what I could not understand was how the spring loading could have anything to do with the 'variable' nature of the magnification as the tele-adapter provided x2 and the extension another x1... as I mentioned in the passage you quoted!?

Perhaps to give precise distance ?

After having checked the 11/1971 ad,
The mounts available were Nikon, Canon FX (before fd/no auto aperture), Topcon , Exacta (Topcon & exacta mounts are nearly same except auto aperture)+ M42.. NOTHING ELSE

I have a tele converter 2x-3x.

Brand? Vario Teleconverter 2x (CS) Japan. ¿¿??

Three points. 2X, 2,5X and 3x

2 tubes. the first to put when we need 2,5x

The second to put with the first when we need 3x.

IQ Good resolution at 2x. Only "emergency" to use 2,5. Not use 3x.

Loss of contrast near 1 stop at 2x.

Any reference of the brand?

Thanks.

Rino.

Not sure.

Mine has glass only in the single section, the other appears to be a simple tube. The only odd thing is as I said, the lens in the 2x section moves on a spring, and the extension tube section has an 'inner cylinder' that matches the diameter of the rear element of the 2x section, seemingly compressing it when in use? I wondered if this was to minimis internal reflections from inside the adapter or to prevent flare or
???
