I bought a Hanimex flash off of evilbay recently which was described as in excellent condition and working. When it arrived I found that it would olnly fire 1 in 3 times. I contacted the seller, no response so I raised a dispute, no response. I then gave negative feedback and then he contacted me to say that he'd been away unexpectedly and said he would give a full refund. So I sent it back and he did refund me.
A couple of days later, I just happened to discover that the same flash is listed again as excellent. Click here to see on Ebay
I did agree to withdraw my neg but I'm not going to now as hopefully others will see this as it mentions the item. _________________ Casual attendance these days

That is sad.... the fact he listed it again as excellent. You did the right thing as I read the negs on a buyer before considering buying their goods. It would/should be a good warning to prospective buyers. _________________ Moira, Moderator

He does say "All In Excellent Working Order. I Tested it Off the Camera today"... so I suppose it is possible that there was some sort of incompatibility between the flash and martinsmith99's camera... _________________ Sigma DP1, Nikon D40 (hers ), Polaroid x530, Pentax P30t, Pentax P50, (P30t/P50 K-A to Nikon F body mount conversion)

I guess it's possible that the problem was with the camera, though that's easy enough to rule out empirically, and the Hanimex Pro 550 flash isn't dedicated, so it's hard to see what compatibility problems there could be. _________________ Alex |

Trigger voltages can vary significantly between flashes from different manufacturers... to the point where some flashes can actually damage the electronics in digital cameras if they are used. The polarity could be reversed as well.
Since the "tolerance" to these conditions varies from camera to camera, it could very well be that this flash was in fact tested and working with one camera, but just happens to not work with another. _________________ Sigma DP1, Nikon D40 (hers ), Polaroid x530, Pentax P30t, Pentax P50, (P30t/P50 K-A to Nikon F body mount conversion)

That's a good point to recall. I'm pretty sure that the Pro 550 is a very old flash, perhaps at least twenty years, so trigger voltages may be very high. It would be interesting to know what camera martinsmith99 was using, and whether it has suffered any damage, since these older flashes can have trigger voltages in the hundreds. _________________ Alex |

It was nothing to do with the camera. It didn't work in test mode when not attached to a camera. I tried it on 3 of my cameras as well to rule that out.

You can't get more conclusive than that. _________________ Alex |
