Yashica Mat and Velvia - Close Up Experiment

I fooled around with hand-holding various close-up filters in front of the
Yashica Mat. I tried about 8 shots in various magnification of filters.
I think this one came out the best. I wasn't expecting much, so this
was a decent surprise.

I know, it's a rather expensive way to experiment. Confused But how many
times do we live? Once that I know of. Laughing

I don't remember which filter I used here, though. This is one of those
times that I didn't bother to write the data in my little shirt
pocket notebook. Embarassed

But, at least I know it can be done. Framing shift is a problem, of
course. I approximated the composition by using the filters in front of the viewing lens first.

Used the "brain capable" sunny 16 rules, and exposed for the whites.
Looks like I was a little bit off, as I think a half-stop, or even a full
stop under would have been better.

I think that a judicious bit of sharpening and possibly Levels would make
this a pretty decent shot. This is straight out of the camera (and scanner).

Trillium Ovatum
Yashica Mat
Velvia
(Possibly a +2 close-up filter)

I think you did right well, Mr. Smith and Weston.

The word Velvia still looks like a pretend cheese product, though, whenever I read it on this forum ... Shocked Laughing

The close up filters worked well for you Larry.

How much latitude do you have with this film? I know with print film you can over-expose quite a bit and be safe but their is very little leeway for under-exposure.

It's a stunner, Laurence, love this shot! Cool

Colors are exquisite.

Thx Rebel; however, to my eye it seems a bit overblown on the
whites, though a histogram doesn't show it to be so.

Thanks Martin, it's fun to fool around with equipment, that's for sure.

The latitude is REALLY narrow. Velvia gives not even a tiny bit of
leeway for shooting. Shocked You can look at a single-stop difference
in two Velvia images, and the two images seems to be miles apart
in exposure.

Thanks Bill. I certainly do love the Velvia for greens. And the yellow
stamens are dead-on to the original color. Velvia, like all other films,
has its own place in the photo world.

Fish and Scheimpflug: That Velvia Cheese box looks like it might
have been shot in Velvia itself! Pretty gaudy! Very Happy "Cheese food
substitute" - nothing but the best.

The Velvia box even got a smile from my Farm Towning bride ... Shocked Laughing

I am glad you "had to ..." Cool
