I really don't know if this applies Smile ... but it is like you can look through the picture here.

Super Takumar 35/3.5 on a Canon 20D, B/W in post processing.

Btw, I only have one good functioning eye, which makes that my idea of 3D is probably very different anyway Smile

Awesome! I agree that the lens aperture and distance are the key.

Took this this morning with Pancolar 50/1.8. Very Happy

Is this 3D (Elmarit-R 90mm f/2.8 fully open on D700)?

Interesting thread but confusing as there are different views on 3D, and it would seem to boil down to:- who do you want people to say "wow" to your 3D shots......99.5% of the public or 0.5% of the experts.

No one has mentioned colours, as it's difficult to get different wavelengths to foucus at the same spot....could this help to give a 3D effect as in this shot:-

Yes.
In fact many of the last pictures posted are very good pictures, but they don't look 3D to me - not in the way I mean it.

One that does look 3D to me is Integrale's.

Thank you - but it is interesting how 3D is concieved differently; Orio, having read many of your posts on this forum, I have a high degree of respect for your opinion - how do you define 3D? (Feel free to use my above picture to illustrate your points if that helps.)

And I know your view i.e. 3d in depth, but my simple view is:- the subject wanting to leap out of the print or computer screen esp when one of the basic un-official rules in photography is.... "to isolate your subject from things not important (to the subject).

just look a slide on a lightbox and you will understand what is 3D

An old one.

For me, the 3-D look is most pronounced when both the foreground and background are out of focus. So I used this criteria to choose s couple of shots. They were both taken on a Canon F-1 shooting Kodachrome 64. The first image was probably taken with a Vivitar S1 28-90 f/2.8-3.5, and the second was taken with a Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror.

I call this one "The Nose" because that was the point of focus.

A couple of air show officials. Hawker Sea Fury in the background. No foreground visible in this image, but to me it still has a strong 3-D effect.

An interesting thread. I searched for some 3D-ness photos, which do not
use "telescopic effect" and are mostly in focus. I am not sure these samples
convey Orio's truly 3D-ness suhc as his first photo in this thread in totally
different cases.

Hydrangea (Makro-Planar 50/2 ZF)

Building (Contax G-Planar 45/2, famous for its 3D-ness)

Geranium (KERN Switar 50/1,8 not macro lens, old Fuji Reala shot)

I shot the same geranium with KERN macro Switar 50/1.9, but it did not have the same 3D-ness.

By the way these 3D-ness is totally lens dependent I guess.

I cannot see well now, the both eyes are not focused correctly (i.e. no 3D depth) due to the recent
"fall" which damaged my brain a bit, may require six months to recover. Very Happy Very Happy

Koji, the first two definitely have a lot of dimensionality !!

Best wishes for your recovery! It is very sad what has happened but fortunately you will be able to recover, this is great news Very Happy

Now using "perspective" these shots show 3Dness, but they are mostly in focus (i.e. no telescopic shots).

In vienna (central market) Zeiss 25/2.8 ZM @f5.6??

Taro (Nikkor AF 16/2,8 fisheye @f9)

House and garden (Zeiss 21/2.8 ZF @f8 )

Bridge and river in Uji (Cosina Voigtlander Ultron 28/1.9 @f8 )
