RE Auto Topcor serial number and name ring description

PostPosted: Fri Mar 14, 2014 5:25 pm    Post subject: RE Auto Topcor serial number and name ring description Reply with quote

Topcon lenses are highly collectible. However, only limited information are available online. The definite reference on the subject, _Topcon_Story_ by Antonetto & Russo, is almost impossible to find. I was lucky to get one; it was wonderful. The book contained vast information on the history of Tokyo Kogaku and Topcon cameras which painted a clear picture of early years of SLR. It included detailed data on all series, versions, and variations of Topcon SLR lenses including the range of known serial numbers. However I became frustrated when I found a couple of my lenses has serial numbers out of the published sequence. A quick internet search reveals more of these unlisted lenses. In addition some times it was not clear how many silver and black lenses were manufactured. Clearly a new edition is needed.

As a result, I have been keeping note of the name ring marking and the last know copy of RE Auto Topcor lenses (REAT) for a short while now. I am no expert on the subject. In fact the main reason I first compiled the list was in order to get familiar with the series and to identify which lens I should try. I am posting it here so that it could be vetted by all the guru's. Hopefully with enough participants we will be able to tell more accurately the number of lenses produced and other relevant information, i.e., pinpointing exactly where the silver ended and black began.

This list covers REAT ONLY. A&R identified 23 lenses with distinguish Topcon Codes in the series. The order of the lenses and their versions assignment followed the convention used in A&R.

All information in the list came from A&R except where noted here. Curly brackets indicated other references. Square brackets were my comments. Name ring markings were from my research. I am interested to see if your copies were marked differently. The variation were mainly as follows:
*** Lower vs upper case (i.e., RE vs Re)
*** Decimal marks (, vs .)
*** Dividers (space vs comma vs hyphen)
*** Focal length unit (cm vs mm)
*** With or without Japan
*** With or without a serial number

Without much further ado, the list.

Sometimes Topcon omitted the leading zero's of the serial number therefore the number of digits may varies. I want to get this right so I am interested to hear from you who has lenses with low serial number too.

A&R refered to “Marco Antonetto and Claudio Russo, 1997. Topcon Story: Topcon Enigma. Nassa Watch Gallery. Switzerland. ISBN 88-87161-00-3”. In case you want to try Interlibrary loan.

I always wondered what RE stood for. Clearly the R, a letter which was prominent in all Topcon focal-plane shutter camera models, was for Reflex, an indication that the camera was employing the most advance photographic technology. The E was apparently stood for exposure meter, an advancement that made Topcon cameras sat above other SLRs of the time.

The REAT looked nice in a line up. Other than the 30mm, the 500mm and the GN's that had different look, all REAT shared the same basic design. All of them were in Exakta mount. They all had clicked aperture ring. The focus ring, where available, had rubber grip that fashioned a distinctive fine vertical grove pattern (the 500mm had coarse groves. The GN's sported a square pattern.) They were finished in satin silver (A&R refered to this as “chromed”) or matte black. Some but not all had shiny chrome trim.

Most REAT had a variation of “RE Auto Topcor” marked on the name ring. The zooms and the helicoid macros were labeled RE Zoom Auto Topcor and RE Macro Auto Topcor, respectively. The only exceptions were the three helicoid-less macro's which were simply marked Macro Topcor (because they are, in fact, not auto lenses) and the GN lenses which were marked RE GN Topcor.

While REAT was the series normally associated with high quality Topcor lenses, Topcon actually produced several lens series. If you buy online, you'll have to be careful when you read the ads. Lenses with the following encouraging description were not REAT.
*** A special edition Topcor with the word AUTO omitted.
*** A Topcor that has a semi-automatic button.
*** A Topcor with all metal grip.
*** A Topcor with no aperture ring fashioned a weird unknown mount.
*** A very hard-to-find Topcor with a transparent distance scale window.
*** An Auto Topcor (no RE) with Nikon F mount!
While many of these lenses were very good in their own right and some were quite scarce indeed (like, the ones with a window), they are simply not REAT. [The last one in particular was a well known imposter. Luckily it can hardly be found at large nowaday. Topcon enthusiasts, in order to cleanse the world of such mimics, hunt them down and lock them up real tight.]

Thanks for the information Tao, i`ts interesting in trying to date my topcors and which versions, I have 2 versions of the 25mm.

The first neatly fits in to V1 the serial is 930424. The second is I think later, uniformly gold/yellow coatings, differences in the lettering on the aperture ring and DOF scale, green dot instead of red on the same scale and a plain black R instead of red one. It also says 25mm and not 2.5cm and the serial is 936158, I`m not sure where that fits in your index for the 2.5cm`s?

A&R explicitly stated that only the cm versions were known. You probably have the hitherto unknown v4. Could you please show the lens?

There was a Japanese website that covered all of the Topcon lenses of all series in great detail, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Sad

This is quite exciting. Only a couple days and we've discovered a couple new species. Smile S/N1122 was supposed to be skipped. Could you please show the lens? Is there a kidney-shaped groove on the rear end?

It looks the same as all my other green dot RE's, one short groove toward the inside, one long groove toward the outside.

As you can see it`s not in the choicest conditon, but I got this one for next to nothing, and it works!

Having had a quick look through your others I`m sure I have one or two others that don`t quite fit the indexing, I`ll post up more info when I get a chance.

@Macca: Thanks for sharing. I have updated the info.

Interestingly I also have a lens with "Topcor" scratched off. I am wondering if these were clearance items. Something like those remainder books/magazines with clipped covers.

Having had a quick look through your others I`m sure I have one or two others that don`t quite fit the indexing, I`ll post up more info when I get a chance.

Please.

It looks the same as all my other green dot RE's, one short groove toward the inside, one long groove toward the outside.

I was trying to determine whether you lens completely belong to the V1 (variation) or a transition period. You see, the V1 (original) has three grooves but the V1 (variation) has only two as you described.

New last known for 99B. Do you by any change still have photos of the lens. Were there really two zero's?

I'll try to do a thorough check later ....

Ponctuation is different on some lenses... you may need to take note of that...
I think there is also two sets of capital letters ...

But i'm not sure all of this is relevant.... i thought there was all of these inf in that "Topcon Story" book....

RE, Auto-Topcor 100mm 2.8 s/n 75055231, silver.

Seems to be an extra digit on these.
