It really looks great, VGR !!
And your portraits are top notch as always (not to mention your models Wink )

I was not aware of the existence of this Helios. Any clue about optical scheme?
I must get one copy of this lens.

There are only very few informations about this lens in the net. It was a replacement / kit-lens for the Zenit 122. Lens design is from 1990, no further improvement in resolution specs compared to Helios 44M-whatsoever, only angle of view and speed.
As far as I understand the things I've read, the unusual focal length of the original Helios 44 and the successors (58mm) was the result of problems of the russian lens designers to archieve acceptable results in using the Biotar-Design for a shorter focal length than that. With the improvement of materials and production methods it gets possible later, for example with the Helios 77M. But as we all know, this was a short time before the decline of the soviet camera industry.

As usual they were made by a few factories. The Helios 77 from VGR is made by Jupiter Valdai. I had one from VOMZ Vologda.

Here are a few specs I have from the Zenit 122 manual:
http://www.winken-zemke.info/?p=20

But as usual, I'm so impressed by the examples from VGR here. A few more and I will sell all my lens. I think I'm just a boring tech-head Very Happy

Thanks for showing, VGR!

There must be a relation then between the Planar (double gauss) and the Biotar. OK I surely am not a scientist. But the schemes look the same.

Yes, there is a relationship. Rudolph improved the double gauss with the planar end of the 19th century. This was followed up by the Lee Opic Lens from 1920 - and this one was adopted by Merté from Zeiss for the biotar.

I have to say I never was aware of the helios 77m....the 77m-4 is somewhat more common. The faceplate of the first lens picture is interesting. It seems as if the c (which is a s in cryllic) in the mc has been translated along with it. Very very odd. Actually mention of the 77m (without -4) can't be found anywhere. I found this site selling it : http://www.indie35.com/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,44/option,com_phpshop/Itemid,18/ but thats about it...

Now are your samples from the 77m-4? If this were the case than I believe resolution spec have been improved somewhat from the 44m - from 38/19 to 45/25 center/edge. Even from the helios mc 44m-4 - 41/20

This is another one of those lenses that actually have different types of multicoating put on during their production run. The helios 77m-4 with a golden/yellow coating are very rare compared to the purple/blue/red cast ones.
