Looks like constant aperture maybe.

Given the short zoom range, it should perform.
The macro ring works very well.
It seems sharp mounted on the D-810.
Here it is again with a Tokina 80-200 f3.5-4.5 macro zoom bought at the same time and place.
Aperture is a bit wonky in the Tokina.
Tokina seemed very sharp at the 40 foot/12 meter mark.
I'll have a bit more on both after some shots are made.

Mine here might look a little grubby but it literally just looks like dust, certainly obvious with an overexposed shot. The focus markings don't look faded. The aperture markings look a tiny bit worn, but fun fact- that also happened to my mint Sigma 18mm f2.8 Filtermatic (non-XQ, 'last era').
Actually, me having an APS-C camera + Metabones Speedbooster Ultra is more interesting imo than a full frame comparison test. Whilst the Ultra has even less impact on IQ, improvements to tele centricity and the slight (1.1?? 1.05??) crop left over is best it can look. Also I can accurately adjust flange for best performance with the glass... |

The pluracoat lens in the linked thread is actually the Tokina 17/3.5 rebadged to 18mm, some say it was rebadged because Spiratone had already sold the Sigma 18mm F/3.5 and F/3.2 lenses previous to that, and they wanted to keep the same focal length in their catalog, making the #1 lens actually the last released.
Sigma had 3 different 18mm lenses in that period, the release order was said to be F/3.5, F/3.2 then finally an F/2.8 model, the last of which was not sold by Spiratone as far as I am aware. |

Well, this is curious.
I don't believe this to be the case. I bolded the '72mm filter thread' part because I believe it's an earlier, a different lens:
It has a much larger front element than the Tokina SL 17mm f3.5, which has a 67mm filter thread too.
This is the later Sigma Pluracoat 18mm, which has a 67mm filter thread and smaller element like the Tokina, and the distance markings look closer to Tokina too:
However, this 1979 modern photography review claims the 72mm filter, 18mm f3.5 Pluracoat is the Tokina 17mm f3.5 SL:
Putting aside the styling, which may be more similar to the Tokina now: the front element size is clearly larger. They are different designs.

37xxx serial signifies Tokina for Vivitar. Also the chrome ring with red dot at the mount is typical for Tokina lenses (although it was copied by some other companies, but mostly crap second/third rate lenses).

I also got an Ensinor 135mm f2.8 but it is absolute junk. Horrific IQ. Returning (especially as it also has a barely moveable focus ring).
Last week I got this big beast for a great deal: a Super Takumar 200mm f4 . Then I added a 2x teleconverter. This makes it a fun 600mm on my Fuji APSC camera...
Next up is a Super Multi Coated (radioactive) Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 which will hopefully come tomorrow. |

I've had the 15mm before but was a bit disappointed by it's performance on the Sony. It's really good on film, but then my only L39 camera was a really beat up Fed2 so it didn't see much use.
The 12mm is not perfect either, it has horrendous vignetting but it's insane angle of view makes up for the extra post-processing time.
