And now considering Zeiss Sonnar 180mm for $260. Is that a good price?

In my opinion definitely not a bargain but not unreasonable if it's known to be a good copy.

Edit: CZJ version assumed.

The difference is closer to ½ stop, but I would guess that much of the difference in size comes from different manufacturer & design. For example, compare Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM to Takumar 50mm f/1.4; the former has 77mm filter threads, the latter 49mm… =)

I recently picked up a Fujica 705w body in mint condition with case for a tenner to get my M42 career off to a good start...!

Spotmatic SP body for £17.
Zuiko 300mm F4.5 in mint condition for £90.
Vivitar 135mm F2.8 M42 - free.

I was owed some money by a customer who runs a photography shop. We did a deal on the collection of old camera he used to have on display so I ended up with 54 more cameras in my collection Shocked

I have since sold seven of them and made back the money he owed me.

Still to sell are a Rolleiflex TLR from 1946, YashicaMat LM, 7X5 plate camera and over 40 more...!

I'm not sure if it counts but I also got a Yashica Lynx 14 (rangefinder) a while back for £12 and my brother-in-law gave me his 'old' film camera set - a Minolta X-700, Rokkor 50mm F1.7, Minolta MD 35-70 zoom and a cheap 70-210 zoom.

Very Happy

Pentax-M SMC 1.4/50 - €5.00 (charity shop find recently)

Absolute best ever (to my mind), were the following goodies I acquired Down Under (Mo will know!!!) over a period of a few months:

Auto-Chinon (genuine Tomioka) 1.4/55 - AU$33.00
Steinheil München Quinar 2.8/135 VL - AU$46.00
Spotmatic SPII with S-M-C 1.4/50, 2.8/105, 2/35 - AU$159.00 (shipped)

When I got these, the exchange rate was approximately AU$1.00 = €0.50 Wink

It does seem as if the bargains have dried up on Australian *Bay recently, or they're not shipping outside Australia Crying or Very sad

A rather smelly case previously owned by photographer for a mid-size midwestern USA city newspaper, ca. late 1970s. Owner probably smoked Balkan Sobranie in a pipe, judging by the remaining scent. Still, it all had to be sprayed and/or aired for several days before bringing into house. Case contained:

Yashica GSN Electro 35 (45/1.y Color Yashinon DX)
Fujica ST-701 SLR (M42)
(Chinon) Argus CR-3E SLR
--- w/ M42 lenses: ---
(Chinon) Auto-Cintar 55/1.7
Sigma-Z 24/2.8
(Tokina) Vivitar 35/2.8
(Komine) Vivitar 90/2.8 macro
Suntar 135/2.8
Vivitar 2x TC
--- and other stuff ---
filters, Viv flash, cables, etc

Average price of bodies, lenses, flashes, case: US$3 each. Think about that: a fine RF, the Chinon's advanced M42 body and 55/1.7 glass, the Viv macro -- and the rest isn't bad either. I use it all (except the case).

.... a Takumar 83/1.9 which everyone thought was a typo.
Came complete with caps, hood, case.... the price was good enough for me to toss all the other lenses and cameras which came with that kit.

For those of you who know - this is so rare in M42 that there are no factory records of it. It is more commonly seen in M37 (and even that is rare).

Last I heard, less than 20 pieces were known to exist.

And then there was another good deal on a Vivitar 135/1.5 .

Alas, I bought these years ago. The prices now would be very high for the rarer birds, and for the more common stuff like the SMC Takumar lenses ... the prices have dipped dramatically.

Congratulations on the 83mm. I have that one too, albeit the M37 black + chrome version which was converted later to M42. It's one of the best lenses I own (at least to my taste)!

... and congrats on your Enna Werk 85/1.5 . That is just as rare.

To buy my 85/1.5, i had to learn Dutch in one hour so I could register into a dutch auction site and register my one single bid ... and then figure out how to communicate with the seller.

All turned out well and the lens showed up eventually ... and I've not logged back into that auction site since. I think that was 9 years ago.

Interesting; today there are no Dutch auction sites anymore. Was it Ricardo.nl? The other one is Marktplaats but that's not really an Auction site (although they are now owned by eBay).

Yes, the Enna is a fine lens too. I should use it soon now that the light is much better (I bought it in the heart of winter).

Maybe you have some shots with the 83mm to share?

Yah ... when I get round to shooting some.
I have not used my 83mm since going fully digital from film.

I can't recall the name of the dutch site. But I did read somewhere that Enna only made 250pcs of each of the 85/1.5 variants.

The Enna is really warm on my EOS DSLR. Too red actually. I liked the Biotar 75/1.5 though... cooler.
