I got the test roll for the Kiev-4.
Film Agfa 100 B&W, usual Epson 4490 scanner
The lens is always the Jupiter-8 50mm f/2 (soviet Sonnar copy)

It sure holds detail in both light and dark - and that's a very artistic test shot too Smile I love those stone banisters. Looks like another excellent setup.

Don't I can't really judge on a scanned B&W picture. What is your impression you are very experienced on this area.

I think I have set sharpening in the scanner a bit too strong.
It looks right when resized, but at scanning size looks a bit harsh.

Orio is just showing off! Leave it to him to have a keeper in every frame! Laughing Looks excellent to me Orio, you've got a great piece of kit!

I think the Jupiter-8 has a nice contrast and is well suited for black and white.

I wonder why #2 has turned out green. I scanned in "B&W negative film" mode. Strange. Every now and then the 4490 makes it weird.

look very good
100% crop doesn't count for a lot, the grain is always awful on lcd monitors but once printed grain is transformed in texture

Orio, try some Neopan Acros 100 in it, very small grain...

I will, Bill.

Actually I am not disturbed by the grain here. Just by the excessive sharpening.

I really like the bokeh, as in 2, detail b

The lens looks like a good performer and I don't mind the grain, either.
I just have to make sure my scanner doesn't have any cat hair on the
glass when I scan! Laughing Laughing Evil or Very Mad

the first two have a real classic vintage look, very classy rendering.

For my taste the contrast is a bit high perhaps, I find scanning for mid gradations is the hardest bit.

Yes.
I think it depends more from my scanning, than from the lens.
I will try to rescan with better settings.

The focussing is spot on so the rangefinder is accurate, and the exposures look perfect so the shutter is fine too. They all look superb Orio, especially No 1 with the steps.

I think the graininess is probably more related to the film than the scanner, but I'm not an Agfa fan so maybe that's a biassed view. I'd like to see what it does with a fine-grain film like PanF, FP4+ or T-Max100.

I reduced the in-scanning sharpness, and adjusted the black and white points to have less extreme and more conservative positions.

Worked very well, thanks.

I really do prefer that mid tone set - much easier on the eye. Got me thinking about a Russki rangefinder now. Smile

The Jupiter-8 really does great for being a 15-20 Euros lens.

Man these are nice first time out results again Shocked Orio I think your J8 is a super winner at least based off of these samples. It will be very interesting to see the some color results. How do you like shooting the Kiev?

Ahhh... this is the reason for shooting with this kind of equipment. That's timeless
