This volna 80mm is laying now for 2 years in my cupboard, because I never had a adapter for it.
Now I'm curious what kind of photographs it produces. Is it a pentacon six (P6) mount? Or a earlier kiev mount?

Definitely P6.

it is not very sharp , and have lots of flare if the sun is not in your back ..
low contrast and strange colours.

but it's a good lens to have fun with.

I often wonder about how this compares against the very similar Arsat; Herbert Keppler did a head-to-head test and found the Arsat to be a tiny bit better, but then it could have been sample variations.

Farside, glad to hear from you that the mount is P6! Smile

That would be no problem with a P6-eos adapter.

Your copy seems have some trouble or your eyes is better than mine, because I found this is a really great lens with beautiful bokeh, colors and sharpness is okay.

Kiev-88 is screw like mount not bayonet.

well ..there is sharpness mostly in the center.. the edges are quite soft.

it's suitable for portraits.

but the out of focus is too busy for my taste.

i agree with attila, i love this lens. i use it with canon 5d and adapter and i find it sharp and beautiful colors; it's one of my favorite lenses.

It was one of my worst decisions to sell my Volna 80mm! I really really love the photos taken with it! It's sharp, has nice warm colors and focuses down to 0.6m! This is a nice lens!

If you don't like it, I take it! Wink

cheers,

Karhallarn

btw if you have those cheap sets of macro rings you can mount it without an adapter.

Just measure how many rings do you need and you can attach the lens with packing tape to the rings.

and it will be like tilt/shift Very Happy

This lens is produced on the arsenal factory in 1993, so it should be very similar. sample variations would not surprise me, production culture is very low there.

I know the russian quality control was not that good, but still I love allmost all my russian lenses: tair 300mm, mir 37mm, jupiter 37am, jupiter 9, 135mm and the helios-lenses.
These are all jewels to me!

By the way, I bought this volna-lens from a lady that also didn't knew which bayonet it was. I knew at that time (2 years ago) that it was a good lens. So it was a bit of a gamble.... Cool

I have the Rokinon 85 1.4, the Jupiter-9, and this lens in the 80-85mm prime range and I have to say that the Volna out of all three of them gets used the most. I just love it.

Interesting.
May be I should try it one day if I come across it.
Resolution in specs is 45/25 l/mm center/field but apparently it's not a problem.

it's a russian copy of a east german copy of the west german planar .. so in theory should be good.

What i doesn't like with russian lenses is the build quality.. it really sux.

Actually this one is very good built... or at least my sample.

The Volna/Arsat could be a copy of the Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar, but the Biometar is totally different from the Oberkochen Planar, thus no copying involved at all.

The Volna seems to focus much closer than the Biometar, so perhaps it isn't a copy, either. I think the "mother of all lens tests" included a Volna, but sample variation probably makes it pointless trying to draw conclusions from that.

Well, optical schema of volna3 is different from Planar - instead of the first group ( 2 lenses glued together) before the aperture volna3 has 1 ordinary lens. Other elements in both schema are the same.

no wonder it's softer then planar.

Interesting rendering and nice sharpness for sure. A deep hood is a must as it's quite prone to flare; otherwise it has good contrast and very nice colors. It's a good one for sure Smile

It's not a bad lens, but I found it long on a crop so sold it. Plus I had just bought a Tamron 90 which was sharper. A good lens and I would get another if I had a P6 mount camera.

Martin: How do you mean "long on a crop"? I'm trying to reconcile that comment with you having purchased a 90mm.

I am a big fan of sharp lenses, but more recently I have begun to appreciate total image quality more. I'm beginning to see things in lenses that I hadn't noticed so well when just focusing on sharpness. I appreciate bokeh more - the more unusual the better. Color rendition and the way whites aren't blown out by some lenses is something I also appreciate. I think it was my recent purchases of Komura and Meyer lenses that brought my attention to IQ.

Thank you, Olivier, I appreciate seeing those images. How would you say the lens is different than others in that focal range? Any idea how it compares to the Jupiter-9? I'll have mine in about two weeks and will put it through some maneuvers.
