I think you would know SLR lenses ?

You did miss a very important focal length 85~90mm.

PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2009 9:48 pm    Post subject: Re: Russian Holy Trinity Reply with quote

35mm
MIR-24

50mm
Volna-9 - best bokeh
Zenitars - best overal performance
Helios-44 - best overal performance per $

135mm
Jupiter-37AM MC - best sharpness, good bokeh
Jupiter-11 - sharp, best overal performance per $
TAIR-11A - very smooth bokeh

Volna-9 and TAIR-11A are two exceptional russian lenses, there are no other lenses with similar character.

In a less flippant way than last evening...perhaps one too many beers Embarassed

The Helios-40 1.5/85 is a thing of beauty, but tends to be quite expensive.

The Jupiter-9 2/85 is a pretty good substitute in its own right, and is more affordable.

The Tair-11A 2.8/135 is an outstanding piece of glass - I just got one recently and need to become more familiar with it, but first impressions were more than satisfactory.

The Jupiter-37A 3.5/135 in its many flavours rarely disappoints either, and they can still be had for quite reasonable prices.

I would agree with no-Xs assessment. However don't forget the Mir 1/1B, 2.8/37. I've found them to be sharper than the Mir 24 and comparable with the CJZ 2.4/35.

Apart from the obvious candidates you might consider the Volna 3 2.8/80 and the Vega 12 2.8/90.

- 85mm ~ 90mm

Jupiter-9 85mm F/2

Vega-12 90mm F/2.8
(Amazing lens, a really hidden gem)

- 135mm

Tair-11 135mm 2.8 (In my opinion, the best 135mm out there. Even better than CZJ and Pentacon/Orestor).

I second No-X very good indications, except I would not include the J-11 (it's a good lens, but it makes no sense to include it in a list with the J-37 which is it's successor, costs the same money -very little- and is better under all respects).

Two mentions of the Vega 12 have me curious now!

It looks like they have really unusual mounts though (I've seen two types), and I wonder would it work on an EOS?

VEGA 90mm vote from me too. Exceptional lens and exceptional cheap also in this focal length.

Helios-40 8,5cm f1.5
Helios-44 M39 SLR lens alu finish
jupiter-9 silver finish 85mm f2

1. Pentacon 6, Kiev 60, Kiev88CM, etc
2. Kiev88, Salut C, etc

The P6 mount is usually designated 12b where the "b" is Cyrillic and has a bar on the top. The K88 mount is usually 12B. However I have seen them switched ! And the dealers sometimes get it wrong. If you are buying try and get one where a picture of the mount is shown. I bought a Mir 38b (P6 mount) which was advertised as a K88 lens.

Adapters are readily available, e.g.,

Oh? I missed that post Laughing Laughing

Anyway, nobody has mentioned the Volna-3. I had it for a while but sold when I got the Tamron 90mm. I half regret that decision.

Amazing! This forum also acts as an educator - it's really something else!

Thanks for your help so far, this is what the mount would look like if I decided to go for this particular lens...

That's definitely a Pentacon Six mount (also known as Praktisix, Kiev-88CM, etc.) Plenty of P6-EF mounts, and might I suggest spending a few dozen more clams to get a P6-EF tilt adapter, which will turn any and all P6 lenses into a tilt lens? Smile

Thanks for the confirmation of the mount - I actually bit the bullet on this lens, to the tune of a whole €29.00.

The only other P6 mount lens I have at the moment is the Sonnar 2.8/180, but I'm really liking the idea of a tilt-adapter - thanks again to everybody for their help today (and every day) Wink

You should go for the AF Confirm adaptor. It's a pain in the ass to focus without confirmation, not to mention i use a 350D.

I have a non-functioning Vega 12, the aperture does not close down. Was refunded by seller who did not want lens returned. Shocked

I'd gladly take that off your hands for the price of shipping; perhaps I can try to resurrect it? Smile

I can't find any mir24 out there except this one:

Click here to see on Ebay

Is there a simple version and an mc one?

How many $ or euros would be a fair price?

This is the M42 version, made (I think) by KMZ. If you do an ebay search for Mir 24N you will find the Arsenal version . It's usually supplied with a Kiev 19/Nikon Ai mount, although the mount is interchangeable with an M42 mount. There's an M42 version on ebay at the moment.

It might be common with them. I got one for next to nothing with this fault. It's been apart before, likely to fix this previously. I'll have a go at fixing it, but I'm not too bothered.
