Regarding villages vs larger cities, in English we have these two contrasting terms: rural and urban. Rural would provide the suggestion of small-town settings, and urban would provide the suggestion of the big city. Just an idea. That works pretty well, I think, until you come across small communities that are also tourist attractions, such as most of the towns along the West Coast of the US. Many of the communities are quite small, but I wouldn't consider them to be rural. So, the definitions don't universally apply.

Please rate every pictures with rate function! You can see it below every posts.

Comments would be nice also.

We now have "landscape", "cityscape", and "rural" contests.
While difference between landscape and cityscape should be (if I understand well) that landscape is shot outside of cities, while inside cities and villages it's called "cityscape", the difference between "landscape" and "rural" environments escapes me.

Then maybe it would be a good idea to copy that message here, because I think that many people (at least, the latin-based language people) will understand rural as "countryside" and not as "villages".

erm The confusion in the world of the English language is because of American English and UK English (International English) Rolling Eyes

Rural in the UK is simply "not in the city" and "cityscape" seems to me to be an Americanism (but maybe not and is just a modern word).

I do like that. I was thinking it was a Gin Palace until I noticed the evidence of sheer horsepower with the stubby smokestacks. I take it it's one of those barge haulers?

Dave, you are correct. Pushers like that can move nine barges full of coal at a whack all the way to Mobile. This part of Alabama has been mined for coal for 150 years.

You also need to remember that the word "city" in the UK is specifically a place which has been granted a Royal Charter and so has a special prestige or status. Usually, towns with cathedrals (the admin centre of a diocese) have city status. There are hundreds of large towns which aren't cities.

I don't see rural in many of the shots posted, well, not what I would consider rural, but I am a country boy so my definition of rural probably differs somewhat from those that live in urban areas. For me, if it's rural there has to be the smell of animal excreta in the air and nothing modern or developed in sight! lol
