The lubrication used on German and Soviet lenses at the time don't seem to be very resistant to this. I've always been really careful with my lenses and heat and I've never had a single one get worse on me and my collection is primarily eastern european products.

"Often" is hard to define. There are a few people on forums that have had a problem but I suspect the majority of owners happily enjoy their pancolar without issue.

I had quite a few lenses with sticky aperture blades. Some models seem more prone to it then others. For example, pretty much all samples of Minolta MC W.Rokkor-HG 35/2.8 have slow/oily aperture blades and must be cleaned. Many 85/1.7 Rokkors suffer from that same problem, too. Many samples Pentacon 135/2.8 must be disassembled and their aperture blades cleaned (I have some 10 samples, and I had to clean 6 or 7 of them, so that's quite some statistics on this model). I rarely had Russian lenses with automatic aperture having oil on aperture blades (one Vega 90/2.8 I think). Also, I had a Nikkor AIS 50/1.4 with lots of dense oil on the blades. I had to disassemble the entire diaphragm assembly and clean each blade individually before it even started working.

I have too. But I often buy to repair so my statistics are very skewed. My point was that I've never had a lens be fine and then start to stick.

I've had about 5 Vegas - 3 needed to be cleaned. 10ish Volna/Arsats - 6 needed cleaning. 4 Mir 45mms - 2 needed cleaning. 3 Jupiter 250s - 1 needed cleaning. I would say, given my experience, there is a tendency towards grease separation with Arsenal Kiev products.

Last saturday I drove to Rotterdam for this lens (Pancolar Electric 80mm). The condition was really good. Glass clean, aperture moved fast and accurate, focus was smooth and barrel looked very good.
I would say almost MINT condition. Price 450 euro which is very reasonable for this lens.

Only on top of the aperture blades where 3 small oil dots. On the bottom of the blades were oil lines in schape of the aperture blades when totally closed. It look if they were dried out.
The seller said he gives one 1 year warranty. So wenn aperture blades get stuck, he services for free. After a year he charges 35 euros for a service.

I really want this lens, but I'm worried about the oil and overall built quality.

Buy it or look for another one ? He also had a Contax Zeiss 85/1.4f in Mint Condition for 600 euros. But that this is heavy and big compared to the Pancolar.

What should I do ?

Browse the galleries, there are plenty of examples from both lenses, start with a search in the "Best of lenses" gallery.
As far as build quality, there is no contest, the Contax Planar wins, but how the photos look to you is more important,
a lens that gets broken can (almost) always be fixed, but an image quality that you don't like is more difficult to adjust.

Buying a used lens is never risk-free.

To me 35 euros seems a very reasonable price to service the aperture. You might even consider adding 35 euros to the purchase price and get him to service the lens before you take possession, modern lubricants would surely give you decades of worry free shooting.

Thx guys,

I think your are basically saying 'Get the
Pancolar !' Smile

Can I ask one more question :
Where does the oil come from ? Will it come back after serviced ?

Depend how do you store it , oil can come only from grease of focusing device. Genuine grease easily melt in hot summer , if lens is re-lubed with better grease, no worry it will not come. If you wish professionally re-lubed , service contact to me in pm I will give you repair man contact.

Thx Atilla. I'm going to buy the lens and keep your offer in mind.
I'll post some pics and user experience once I got hold of the lens.

I just bought the Pancolar 80mm 1.8f. He's going to service the lens first and change the old oil with some modern oil that tends to drop less. We decided to split the service costs of 35 euros in half.
I'm really excited.

Congratulations on your purchase, but the cost of 70 Euros for aperture fixing is astronomical.
My Pancolar 1.8/80 developed the same problem, and I had it fixed last summer, from a professional service lab,
total cost 30 Euros for the aperture set back to work and the blades cleaned.

Did you buy it from Maarten in R'dam??? Smile Anyway congratulations with the purchase, it's a fine lens as you can see from the samples on this site (some of which were shot by me).

It is 35 devided by 2. So 17 ,5 for me.
