My Avatar and How It Was Done

Here is what I did. First the photo was taken outside very late in the afternoon just after sundown with a K10D and a 18-55mm kit lens. This was at my Grandson's birthday party and I was snapshooting all over the place. My Granddaughter came up and said "Papa look at my monster eyes." then she gave this strange look . I took the photo and on review started to delete it. At the last second I decided to keep it and look at it further on the computer. Glad I did. One of those once in a blue moon good shots you are lucky to get and recognize!

Here is the heavily under exposed original.

I then used DCE Tools Auto Enhance Plugin to adjust the levels contrast and color.

Then I sharpened by going to Image, Modes and Lab color. Then I selected Lightness in the channels menu and used Unsharp Mask to sharpen the photo a little. Then I went back to RGB color in the modes menu. Then I selected the Dodge tool and lightened the eyes using a very low setting and blending it in.

Then I went to the Image menu and Desaturated the photo changing it to B&W. Then I went to the filter menu and selected the Portrait Skin Cleaner from the DCE tools menu. This cleaned and softened the skin.

Then I used a Vignette Blur tool for Nik Efex Color Pro. And there is the photo...It probably took me two tries to get it and a total of ten minutes. My Daughter wants to have a copy made at 16X20 for Regans memory book so she will have it after she has grown up. I will do that soon.

Any more questions feel free to ask...Oh yeah No special sharpening for the eyes...Mainly just the dodge tool to emphasize them more.

Here's my Avatar:

1. Give my 5-year-old a Canon EOS Kiss F w/ kit lens
2. Have him take a picture of me

The End Very Happy

P.S. Love that picture of your grand daughter, Big Dawg!

To even out the distribution of light I placed the Bessaflex and Pentacon 135/2.8 MC on my colleague's makeup mirror, laid out horizontally on the table. White sheets of A4 size office paper supported by a book each created soft side reflectors. A black handtowel from the office bathroom was used as background, nailed to the wall using pins. Camera was stabilized on top of cardboard box with lens at downwards angle leaning on a banana. The 60mm macro lens was focused manually and set to f/11 to allow a little less abstract bokeh. The SB-800 was bounced off the ceiling with +2/3 EV to counter for the metering area (dark shadow area) and shutter was released with 10s timer and exposure delay mode.

Postprocessing is RAW to JPEG with no modifications.

Used it as a desktop wallpaper as well: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mureena/3086628423/sizes/l/

Now that was a complex procedure!! LOL Laughing

I thought it had a bit of surealism going for it. Almost as if she was appearing out of a mist or dream fog.

Thanks RH. Your 5 year old has a steady hand. Good to see them start young. I started at 6 years old with a Brownie Hawkeye.

Hehe, it helps that OIS was turned on, but his posture ain't that bad, is it?

I started at 7 years old with a Yashica point and shoot (forget which model...) myself. I'm glad I got my son started earlier Very Happy

If your avatar is a picture of you taking a picture, who took the picture of him taking a picture of you? And did someone else take a picture of them taking a picture of him?

Hey, thanks Orio!

I was out this day hoping I could take nice macros at a nearby arboretum to use as my current ongoing "Project 365" photo of the day.

All the calculated shots I took that day couldn't stand a chance against this quick snap I grabbed with my Pentax D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro; it was just perfect Very Happy

And thanks nemesis101 and yes, Farside, THAT is the question. What was that?

I think that was the sound that the universe makes when a rip is made into the space-time continuum :-DDD

I prefer the last but one shot before the extreme blur is added. That's a really good portrait.

Just my choice.

How long did that take?
