The coloured houses have an interesting history. One may think it's done for tourism, and today this is certainly true.
But it's not how it started. According to local history, the colours were a way to separate the different properties.
Another saying is that when the island was mostly a fishermen place, the houses were coloured bright to allow the
fishermen to recognize them in the winter fog.
I have my personal theory, that whatever the starting reason, psychology played a role. The Venice lagoon can be a
depressing place in the winter when you don't have the rich buildings of Venice to brighten it up.
The rain and fog and grey sea of the long winter months can really make the place sad. The coloured houses may have
been a way to cheer up a life that -let's not forget it- before the advent of tourism was certainly a life of hard work and poverty.
