all taken on APS-C sensor sized digital camera, Pentax *istDs and K-x

since I often have stated how much I like this lens, specially for portraits, I just had to be the first Wink and chose portraits only.
photos taken with this lens uploaded to my flickr site near 1000: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/sets/72157605746644529/show/

thank you Leo,
it is much fun to play with wide open, even on APS-C,

gets curious looks

to me the S-M-C 1.4/50 is 'the' epitome of a lens Wink

best greetings,
Andreas

These photos are absolutely wonderful! how would you rate this lens, as far as wide open performance? would you recommend it to someone who shoots primarily wide open?

thank you.

I find the sharpness wide open rather impressive. However I only have little experience with other f1.4/50s. From checking online comparisons I believe that the Tak's wide open sharpness is up at the level of the very best, with hardly any discernible difference between them, resp. that there hardly will be any that shows discernible better sharpness wide open.

three more wide open:

I can not really help you in the quest for the sharpest wide open and having the least CA 1.4/50 lens. Can only tell that I only noticed CA a few times in the typical tree branches against strong backlight. Few times also because I hardly use this lens for landscape. I trust Omar in his answer to your similar question in his thread that the Planar is better at infinity. The Tak shines at close focus, also wide open where I consider it a par.
a quote: '..Pentax has always stuck with the original design and used cemented spherical surfaces there. Aside from being more expensive to manufacture, this results in a lens that is slightly less sharp at infinity in the plane of focus, but that has better off-axis aberration correction and thus, better bokeh or blur.'

stopped down a few stops:

Thank you for your impressive samples and thorough response. I have a Super-Tak 50/1.4, and i love it, i was just wondering how much of a difference there was between Super and S-M-C. thanks again for your help.

I remember you mentioning that you had a Super Takumar 1.4/50.
I can't say if the S-M-C version shows less CA, if superior coating does play a role it well may.
( btw. comparing my Super and S-M-C I noticed that the S-M-C has a larger rear element )

clearly to see that you love this lens, Andreas ! wonderful captures all around.
I have the K-mount version of this lens, I suppose it's totally the same lens design. I'll post a thread lateron.

Cheers
Tobias

thank you very much Tobias and Martin!

Martin I hope that you also use it Wink
cheers Tobias

I really love this lens, it has given my much joy

my copy is beaten up and was very yellow when I bought it for less than 15 Euro, that I had dropped it twice on the camera mounted didn't make it look any better Wink

but that did not effect it's use or performance in any way

just my kind of lens Wink

wonderful images Andreas.

With the outfit of your equipment you are accepted by the persons as a Pro. Not sure that you could taken all this perfect portraits with a lens which looks like new out of the box.

Many thanks for sharing.

Wink

A very nice lense and you use it well. I have the super version and enjoy it very much.

thank you very much Patrick, you sure spotted well Wink

Rolf thank you very much for your flattering comment.
I prefer my camera to look like nothing much, my Pentax, or like s..t., my S-M-C. However quite often, when I show the result on the LCD, people understand that it is rather high quality and are pleased. This lens is most fun for me and over the time I got some which are decently well focused, but if I continue posting more I will soon run out of them Wink

good to know that you like your Super Tak Ron!

welcome to the forum BlackWolf.
there has been a lot of discussion about the radioactivity of lenses on the net, also in this forum, how dangerous or rather not it is and how to best get rid of the yellow teint. I would expect most members being aware of this.
mine was very yellow when bought, I liked the tint, it even had lured me then to using too warm WB on other photos too. I had not tried to 'cure' it but it has gone away by simply using the lens much, often in countries with strong sun.

( on K-x )

nice pic!. frankly, it does not look sharp!

for it's shallow dof wide open it won't look sharp overall, but even at this small size I can see that on matchboxx's photo good sharpness definitely is there.
...........

cheers,
Andreas

I don't know that Mitch's photo has to be ultra crisp. It's a very nice photo, both easy to look at and visually pleasing, without capturing every microscopic skin crease and defect. I find it interesting how Kuuan and Mitch can use the same lens and achieve different but very good results. It speks to their ability to use the lens as well as the lens' ability to be used differently by different people, which is a very good quality for a lens design to have.

[...] these lens do not perform well on any dslr canon camera at all!. perhaps, the lens do well on pentax camera. this is my opinion

Could be manual focusing of fast lens is impossible using viewfinder and stock focus screen which cannot show accurate focus of lens faster than f/2.8...

There are plenty of examples showing these lenses perform exceeding well on Canon dSLRs, including the full-frame cameras! Wink
