Another vote for the humble Tamron 103A... Cheap, small, lightweight and plentiful. It was my go-to for remote camera engine shots at rocket launches. It tested favorably against a Nikkor 200/4 and Canon 70-210 USM, granted at the long end and stopped down. |
103-A at it's longest (210 mm) and F8. This is a lens I picked up for $5.00.
The U.S. flag is about 300 meters away from the camera, and what's shown here is about a 60% crop.
Bought a much cleaner copy for about $20.00 last fall and have not worked it much. For small, I got to the micro-nikkor 200 f4, which seems to be a fairly versatile all-around lens around f8-f11.

I am surprised the 103a is better than the Canon 70 210 which I praise very much. _________________ Lumens Pixel

Ah Ok that makes sense! So you and "mike Deep" are not talking about the same lens,as he is mentioning a "Canon 70-210 USM" (whatever that is - but obviously an EF lens). The only Canon EF 70-210mm I own is the early SF 4/70-210mm, and at least the sample I own is much worse than the contemporary MinAF 4/70-210mm.

USM -- Ultra Sonic Motor (for AF)
Quote: |
A USM lens uses energy from ultrasonic vibrations to rotate the focus ring in the lens. It can harness this power quickly and efficiently for a faster focus speed.
The USM system is also quieter than the STM drive, delivering near-silent focusing in all USM lenses. |

One of the best optics I've ever had was the Leica Vario Elmarit R 35-70 F4. This lens is absolutely amazing and razor sharp from edge to edge on the EOS 5D. |

Here are some samples from a selection of my lenses. There are more in strings where there are single frames from specific lenses but I am not going to search for them.
With each example, look for further images on the same page, as separate posts.
