Hello,

i'm newbie with old manual lenses and for few days i got an Revueon 50 mm, f 1,8 MC (an nice little thing) and an Exaktar 135 mm, f2.8 (ok, i must test this lens better). But to my question:

well, i know with M42 Adapter i can use some old lenses with my Canon 400D. But give it more ways (Adapters)? And which lens is good for macros? At time i use an AF Tamron 90 mm, but it has mechanical problems and eventually i buy here an new or old manuell lens. On my wishing-list is also an Pentacon 5.6/500 mm (ok, i know - not free hand Laughing ). Or give it an better alternate? And at last: WW-lenses? Which lens could here be good?

Hello and welcome Occur. Smile

There are lots of adapters to mount different lenses on the Canon EF mount - DVD Technik have a range:

Look for EOS adapters

http://www.dvdtechcameras.com/other/adapter/adapter1.htm

As do Rugift:

http://www.rugift.com/photocameras/adapters.htm

There are also sellers on Ebay too.

As for wide angle there are a few favourites on here like the CZJ Flektogons but this depends on how wide you need to go as basically it can start to get a bit expensive once you get to around the 20mm mark. Since you have a crop sensor camera, you need to head into what might be considered super wide - fisheye territory if you need to achieve a similar angle of view to something like a 20mm on full frame. The Zenitar 2.8/16 comes to mind here and a few members on here have it.

As I have a full frame DSLR my personal favourites are the Flektogon 4/20 - not the sharpest but unbeatable for architecture due to its excellent lack of distortion and the Flektogon 2.4/35 due to it's excellent sharpness and close focusing ability.

There are other alternatives though and I'm sure that someone will be along to advise you further. Smile

Welcome to see you here!

I had in the past a Pentacon 500mm f5.6 , simple to heavy 3.5 kg! Unusable in most situation.
I suggest to take instead mirror lenses like Tamron SP 500mm f8,MC 3M-5CA 500mm f8 etc.
If you don't like mirror lens DOF try Sigma 400mm f5.6 or Novoflex 400mm f5.6.

For macro cheap and superb solution Nikkor 55mm f3.5 Macro 1:1 you can see reviews and pictures taken with above lenses here in the forum and on mflenses.com/gallery.

Thank you all for welcome and all the tips. It help me a lot.

@Attila
Yeah, the Pentacon is very heavy and a mirror-lens... hmmm, i think i prefer than a Sigma 400 or Novoflex. From the Novoflex i have seen great photos. But from time to time rare to buy.

@bob
Great. So many adapters Shocked - that's open new ways for lenses.

Here two shots with the Revueon 50 mm/f 1.8

and

and a little test with the Exaktar 135 mm/f2.8

The Exaktar looks a bit weak. But 135 mm and for portraits can that be good.

Welcome Occur - those are nice samples, but beware. There are tempters on this forum who will encourage you to try lenses you will find difficult to let go of.

This revuenon seems to give gorgeous photographic results.

Revuenon like a "Kinder Egg" for kids , you never know sure the maker and sometimes you can get amazing result. I have two fantastic Revuenon lens, one 1.4/55mm made by Tomioka (not labeled on the lens) Another one from an unknow maker 2.8/135mm I trade with Carsten. I had one Revuenon zoom lens this was only the lens what I throw to trash. This zoom was incredible garbage I never seen in my life same crappy lens.

The Sigma is an great lens - i've got it for few days - but it was a horrible trip. The EOS Mount has an error - so when i take the lens on the camera body it was a action like bodybuilding Twisted Evil . The next part: the first shots wide open works good, but when i close to f8 or more... the cam says error 99. Well i like this error 99 Evil or Very Mad . Return to wide open - not a chance. OK, the lens goes return - the best way Laughing .

Eventually i should give the Novoflex a chance or give it an old Sigma 400 mm which works on my digital EOS 300D/400D?

I tested two 400mm f5.6 Sigma on my Olympus E-1 I not tested any on Canon EOS.

1) lightweight grey lens with internal focusing labeled 400mm Sigma 5.6 APO was superb lens on my camera.

http://www.mflenses.com/gallery/v/japenese/sigma/sigma_400mm_f5_6/

2) Black Sigma 400 f5.6 labeled to "multi coated" didn't produced any sharp images + plus it was fungused I had to return also.

Revuenon 50mm f1.8 MC is probably the same lens as Pentacon/Meyer-Optik 50mm F1.8. Does it focus to 0.33m and has a 49mm filter thread?

PostPosted: Tue Nov 20, 2007 8:26 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Thanks Attila. I have seen the pictures in the gallery. Nice shots with the lens. Hm, i have read from problems with older Sigma lenses on digital Canon Cameras, but nothing specially over this lens. Eventually anybody knows more?

@Riku
Yes, 0,33 m and 49 mm filter.

Welcome Occur
Older Sigma lenses have to be chipped to work on newer Canon.
I had the same problem with my Apo 135-400, I send it to Sigma and now it work on my 400D
Bad news for your Apo 400, I read a forum thread from 2005 & they didn't have chip for your model anymore.
You can send a mail to Sigma Germany but I think you will get a negative answer.

Occur

welcome back

I believe that Sigma frequently has this problem since they are reverse engineering the electronics. I know there was a spate of issues when the Nikon D200 hit the streets and then with each of the next new bodies as well. Seems to strike Sigmas almost at random
