It's a pity that the list of Soligor serial numbers, which links the first digit (or the first two) to the original maker, has seen no developments since quite a long time:
http://forum.mflenses.com/soligor-12-8-f28mm-eighteen-versions-t30866,start,113.html

I found a nice Soligor 180mm f/3.5 in M42 mount, with serial # starting with 8.
The barrel looks similar to a very common 135mm Soligor, which has a different first digit of the serial (i checked on Google images).
Do you know anything about this lens?
Any clue about the maker?
It looks very close to Sun lenses, 8 could well be one of the many serials corresponding to Sun-made optics.
Here is the lens:

BTW, i think i found the maker for three serials:
1) all/some lenses with serial starting with "R" should be made by Itoh; i don't remember exactly, but i have a note about it, taken some time ago
2) all/some lenses with serial starting with "Y" are almost certainly made by Fujita; i had the first retrofocus wide-angle made in Japan, marked "TAYLOR" and made by Fujita, which has a peculiar "build style" that i found in some Soligor lenses i've seen, which had exactly the same look, and the serial starting with Y.
3) those starting with "KA" are of course Kyoei Acall (see website savazzi.net for infos about their good performance in UV photography). See this example, my last Soligor purchase, a 35mm f/3.5 preset:

cheers

You're right. Same lens.
Soligor serials is a complicated affair.
It seems that identical lenses have different serials.

If you like, why don't you update your original thread with other contributions about Soligor serials?

Ciao

Paolo

Thanks, I just made the updates.
Y code I have down as Komura.
Mainly because of this lens, and my Juplen lens.

This is my original Juplen thread. If this does turn out to be Fujita made. Then Y code Soligor is Fujita.

The Komura version.

Definitely the three lenses in the linked threads are not Fujita!
I don't own the Soligor that looks to be Fujita-made, i've seen only the pictures somewhere on the web.
Here is the P.C Taylor, made for sure by Fujita, that i owned (gave it as a gift to the friend who repairs my lenses, when i need help):

Notice the very peculiar pushbutton on the preset ring, and the barrel style, i've seen a Soligor tele with the same

cheers

Found two with a quick search, it looks that Soligor/Fujita start with Y, but have only four numbers following the first digit.
The other one i have seen followed the same pattern, Y + 4 numbers.

1) from the collection of luisalegria, the first on the left of the front row is a Soligor/Fujita:

2) this has the serial in view:

I have a lens that looks the same, I don't know who made it, but I do know that it is a very good lens, great build quality and handling too, and rather small for a 3.5/180. I like it Smile

it has been a while that I had it in my hand and the lens is not with me right now, but I had been impressed by optical performance, build quality, handling and size and had at least not noticed any wobbling

This is easily fixed. If I remember correctly:
1. Move focus to minimum distance ie max lens extension.
2. loosen the grub screws on the focus sleeve so that it can be slid up exposing some screws
3. On mine it was these screws that were loose - tighten these screws.
4. reset the focus sleeve and tighten the grub screws.

The serial on mine is 864xxxxx btw.

This is a small, beautiful lens!
Really a pleasure to handle!
I gave mine to my friend/repairman, as a kind of compensation (he never asks for money, it's embarassing).
Now it is on sale. Brick and mortar "photographica" shop.
Nobody seems to be remotely interested.
I reckon that it's in Exakta mount, good only for Alphas and Micro 4/3. It has a historical relevance, though (first japanese retrofocus).
And aesthetically gorgeous too...
It seems that we live in a time of consumerism and short-lived "fashions".
A CZJ Flektogon 2,4/35mm of highly variable quality is highly fashionable, and sells for 4/5 times more than a decade ago.
It's the magic of the ZEISS brand Laughing
A small Fujita jewel, albeit branded "P.C. TAYLOR", shiny and with the original box, seems to be far less attractive...
Sorry for the rant... i guess it's because i just received an old german "zebra" tele that has been tampered with Smile

BTW, just won one more Soligor lens, it's a Tele-Auto 3,5/200mm.
I misread the serial thinking it was a H8 (unknown), while it's H6 (Komine).
Whatever, i liked the tripod collar Smile

Back to the serials:
went through many pics on Google Images, Y + 4 digits seem to be Fujita; more digits = Tokina.
I found that the same serials are used on old Hanimex lenses. Good to know.
I found the preset version of the same lens pictured above, with H6 serial, and marked Hanimex.
Useful infos for the collectors out there, i guess.

cheers

Paolo

I've won a chrome eared version on ebay. Serial not visible, hopefully Tokina.
