For mf and film i carry a contax 139 and a yashica fx70, with a Yashica ML 2,8/28, CZJ flektogon 2,4/35 (with adapter) and CZ Planar 1,7/50.
For autofocus/digital i carry the Sigma 17-70 and the 400D. And sometimes the Canon 100-300 tele. I rarely carry both the digital stuff and the mf stuff lately. If i want to travel light i only take the 400D and 17-70.

Sigma 17-70 is very good lens for the price, but it's difference betwwen central and border sharpness is somewhat disturbing for me (I must admit, that in cetre resolution is stunning at 30-35mm)... Last time I took it out was last year's august... Smile

Now I use Distagon T* 25/2.8 and S-M-C 50/1.4 instead Smile

Sounds like you had a bad copy which of course is a problem with Sigma's QC.

I've got the 55/1.8 S-M-C and that's a remarkable lens, but a completely different kettle of fish to the Sigma.

Now I use three lenses

1-General use and first look lens: flektogon 35/2,4
OR in poor light : pancolar 50/1,8

2-Wide angle (only exceptionally use for me): Flektogon 20/4

3-Short/medium tele (portraits, details, etc) J. Sonnar 135/3,5

(till I buy a Pancolar o Biotar)

In my bag I packed (manuals only)
Tamrons:
2.8/80-200

Flektogons:
2.4/35
2.8/20
2.8/65
I know that it is way to many. But as you know: Never say never. It happened when I took camera with one lens that I was missing beautiful shot just because being smart I had short zoom but not long portrait.
With such "artillery" I can take a picture in almost any circumstances. I am going to make about 250-300 shots. Would be beautiful if I could pick 10 decent ones. Wish me luck Rolling Eyes

Now I use the J-9 when creams colors are more important than sharpness.

I return to the pancolar 50 as all-use lens.

I usually take just one lens with me (plus maybe the 50mm Radionar, which weighs almost nothing, doesn't need much space and has a fixed adapter). More often than not, my general purpose lens is something longer than 100 mm, even on the 350D. Shorter lenses are for some specific purpose.

Even for longer trips, I'd take only a couple of lenses. E.g., for a one week trip to Germany, to cities I had never visited before, I took the 72 mm VPK Meniscus Achromat and the 105 mm Radionar on the 350D, which I prefer to the 5D when traveling. Either one of these lenses would do as the only lens on a longer trip (350D + a variable close-up ring + the Radionar is a very flexible combination and only weighs about 800 g.) Other possible only lenses from my collection would be any one of the TTH Cooke lenses, the f/7.7 Uno (slow but very nice) and maybe the Heliar, but they lack the soft focus capability of those my two favorite lenses.

The 180 mm APO-Lanthar is nice but slightly long as an only lens, and I also very much like my Leitz R lenses. These lenses are OK for short, repeatable trips, but for longer and once only trips I prefer my older lenses, especially the soft focus ones, which leave space for memories as they don't draw one's attention away from the subject matter - the substance must be in the contents, not in a superficial, conspicuously high image quality, which rarely is really essential and, besides, takes great skill to utilize appropriately and often great care to achieve. There is something wrong in a photo if one has difficulties seeing past the high image quality, the image quality ought to be something one becomes aware of gradually even on those occasions when the high quality is essential for the intended result unless the main purpose is to demonstrate the quality of one's equipment or PP skills - or just to take striking snapshots. Of course, this is just my personal view and not shared by the great majority these days.

If I shoot 35mm I seem to grab the 35/2.4 Flek most of the time.

Veijo, this is indeed not "mainstream" equipment but it is exactly what makes you so irreplaceable for this forum! Good to have you here!

If I owned the best lenses I have tested, my list would look like this:

- Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 3.5/18 ZF
- Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/25 ZF (even better than my beloved Nikkor-N.C Auto 2.8/24)
- Leica Elmarit-R 2.8/35 or Nikkor-O 2.0/35
- Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE or Leica Summicron-R 2.0/50
- Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/85 ZE

- Tokina AT-X Pro 1:4/12-24 DX Asph.

Wow! What a list. But unfortunately I do not own any of the Zeiss lenses. Sad

Pentax 645: Flektogon 50/4, Pentax 55/1.8, Pentax 35/4. Vega 120/2.8

Revueflex: Takumar 55/1,8, Soligor C/D 35-70, Vivitar Series 1, 100-300

Pentax K110D: Takumar 55/1.8, Kiron 105/2.5, Tokina SD 35-70, Vivitar Series 1, 100-300

Sigma SD-14: Tak 55/1.8, Sigma 10-20/4, Kiron 105/2.5, Soligor C/D 35-70, Vivitar Series 1, 100-300

Don't have too many lenses, but I think they are in a nice range, and the camera pack remains comparatively light, even with the Pentax 645 in the bag.

Also, you can see that I can interchange the lenses between my digital cams and the film cams. I will be soon acquiring an M42 adapter so I can use the medium format lenses on the 35mm systems.

Tomorrow with me at the Carnevale:

on the 50D:

Planar 1.4/85
Sonnar 2.8/135
Sonnar 2.8/180

on the 5D:

Distagon 1.4/35

And that would be the normal setup (sometimes I take the Planar 135 instead of the Sonnar)
But after the experience of last Sunday, where the big crowd forced me to positions that were not ideal for shooting, I will also take with me:

- Distagon 2/28 for those situations where I am too close to the action. The short focusing distance will allow me to get in focus also subjects that are at less than 1 mt distance from me (like it happened with the majorettes last Sunday - I had to skip a lot of photos because they were almost in physical contact with me - that's too close for the 1.4/35)

- Planar 1.4/50 same reason, but for the 50D - when subjects are too close, even a 85mm tele is too much - so a standard lens will do better for portraits.

My normal bag set is one camera and two lenses. But for events like the Carnevale I normally take two cameras and 3-4 lenses - of course sometimes there are exceptions, but, they are always for a reason - I'd never take 10 lenses with me just for fun, because, having to carry 10 lenses would take all the fun away!

Currently, I'm doing a "Project 365" in which I've decided to carry around with me just one lens out of my collection per day and shoot with it only. And each day, I impose upon myself to choose a lens I haven't used recently, thus making it kind of a rotation system.

Yes sometimes, I'll cheat and bring along a second or even third lens, and sometimes, I'll use a lens that I've used fairly recently, but in principle, that's what I've been doing since Jan. 1st. So there isn't one lens I always take with me.

With that said, if I were to imagine myself to be temporarily released from these shackles, I can come up with the following answers, some of which are not befitting here Wink

Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro: what can you say. So versatile. Good to take pretty much anywhere.

Pentax DA 12-24m f4: if I'm to go out into the nature, this will be the wideangle I'll take with me. Granted, I may change my mind if/when I can get my hands on a Distagon, but until that day comes, this will be my babe.

Voigtländer Color-Ultron 50mm f1.8: good pretty much any time I want to get close and personal, whether it be people portraits, vegetation, random objects on streets. This category would be a tossup between this and my Super-Tak 50/1,4. Very hard choice.

Hartblei Super-Rotator 35mm f2.8: if there's any chance I can shoot interesting tilt, then this babe is in my Crumpler.

But again, everything depends on what my goal for the day is going to be, I guess. So if the question is really about "What is your "just-in-case" lens?" Then, again, it would have to be the Sigma 18-50.

At least three primes; 35mm, 50mm and 135mm

For city trips I usually put a 35mm prime or a Tokina 20-35 on one body, and a 135mm prime on the other one. The 50mm (Canon 50/1.8 ) is mostly used for indoor portraits. The Super Takumar 35/3.5 is a great walkaround lens on a 20D, but sometimes a bit too long for city pictures.

Use with film:

4/20 Flektogon

1,8/50 Pancolar

2/85 Jupiter-9
OR
3,5/135 CZJ

I use the Jupiter more than the CZJ. I can't beleave this.

Rino.

Most of time I bring
35mm: CZJ Flek 35/24
50mm: one from CZJ Pancolar 50/1.8 or Tak SMC 50/1.4
135mm: one CZJ Sonnar 135/2.4 or Jupiter 37A
with 400D (+M42 adapter) and one M42 SLR from ST801 or Spotmatic F.

I just came back froma football match that I was watching because three of my students are playing in this team.

I had in my bag:

Canon 40D with Sigma 18-125 OS
Canon 350D with Tamron SP 60-300
Leica Elmar-R 4/180
Yashica Electro 35 GS

PostPosted: Sun May 24, 2009 6:00 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

And this is in my "big bag" (Crumpler SevenFifty Daily XXL - a fantastic bag!!):

Canon EOS 350D & 40D
Yashica Electro 35 GS
Minox 35 GL
Panasonic Lumix FX37

And here the lens list (MF and AF mixed):
- Zenitar 2.8/16 Fisheye (as a really wide prime lens)
- Sigma EX 1.8/24 (as a fast wide angle, eff. 38mm)
- Nikkor-O 2.0/35 (as a fast "normal"; lens, eff. 56mm)
- Leica Summicron-R 2.0/50 (as a fast short tele, eff. 80mm)
- Steinheil Culminar 2.8/85 (for very special pictorial effects and its soooo small)
- Leica Elmar-R 4/180 (for the long tele shots, eff. 288mm)

- Tokina AT-X Pro 4/12-24 (as a superwide angle lens)
- Sigma 18-125 OS (as a stabilized standard lens to start every day with)

And then I have one more lens in this bag, depending on what I feel like taking or what I need to complete it...

There is almost nothing that I cannot do with this set!

I've chosen the...

... Culminar over the Nikkor 1.8/85 and the Volna-3 2.8/80, because the Culminar is ever so compact!
... Leica Elmar 4/180 over the Jupiter 4/200 and the Soligor 70-220 and the Tamron 60-300, because the Elmar is the best of these lenses and the smallest one!
... Leica Summicron 50 over the Nikkor 1.4/50 & 1.2/55, the Zuiko 1.4/50 and the Canon EF 1.8/50, because the Summicron is the best qualitywise and I don't think I need a faster than f2 lens there.
... Nikkor 2.0/35 over the Leica Elmarit-R 2.8/35 and the Vivitar 2.0/28, because the Nikkor is the best of both worlds: as fast as the Vivitar and as good as the Leica.
... Yashica Electro 35 GS over my other rangefinder cams, because it has the best (and fastest) lens and it very reliable.
... Minox 35 GL over the Leica C2, because the Minox has a faster lens and is so incredibly small!
... Sigma 18-125 over the Sigma 17-70 and the Canon EF.S 17-85, because the 18-125 has the longest reach plus it offers the OS that the 17-70 lacks.
... Tokina 4/12-24 because I do not have an alternative - and don't need one.
... Sigma 1.8/24 over the Nikkor-N.C 2.8/24, because the Sigma is a lot faster.
... Zenitar 2.8/16 Fisheye over the Vivitar 3.5/17, the Nikkor UD 3.5/20 and the CZJ 4/20, because the Zenitar is the widest, the fisheye effect is easily correctable with a crop cam.
... Lumix FX-37 as a P&S with wide angle capability.
... EOS 350D and 40D because these are my favourite cameras.
... Gossen LunaSix 3, because it is fun to use.
