Lately, just the Pentax 645 with Pentax-A 55/2.8 and 120/4,
plus a right-angle finder and a tripod.

Not very much! Shocked But it seems to work for me, with a fair amount
of "zooming by walking".

For my trip to Italy in April, I have thought about what to bring.
As I want to travel light, I only take a Samsonite Daypack which I can board with. In this backpack I can put the clothes I need and this set:

EOS 5D
Sigma EX 15-30
Tamron SP 2.8-3.8/35-80
Tamron 2.5/24
Leica Summicron 2/50 or Zuiko 1.4/50 (haven't decided yet)
Vivitar 2.3/135

and the NEX-set all fits into my small waist-bag:
NEX-3
Sony SEL 2.8/16
Fujian 1.7/35
Jupiter-8 2/50
Schneider-Kreuznach Tele-Xenar 3.8/75
Leica Hektor-M 4.5/135 (hopefull soon to arrive Wink)

This stuff is so compact, it's amazing!

Really nice! With the EOS 5D set, you have a couple of pretty darn
compact zooms and 3 nice primes! The Tamrom 35-80 is simply a
gorgeous and efficient piece of quality equipment. How could
you go wrong, Carsten?

I am amazed that the NEX-3 set will fit in a waist-bag! Shocked Wow,
what a "backup"! Although it's not really a backup, it's more like a
whole camera system in a lunch sack! Cool Laughing

Unless a person was a collector, I would think that a setup like that
would be perfect for the rest of a lifetime - you really have it all for
a group of fantastic traveling gear.

Yes. That's really perhaps the most amazing part of the NEX system.
I will show a pic of that later.

Absolutely correct. Add a nice and fast 180/200mm lens for the 5D and you're done for good.

I would love to see a pic of both systems.

Hmmm...how about a nice fast Sonnar 180/2.8? A very nice and very
small lens. Wink Very Happy

Bring on the pics! I really want to see your NEX system with those
extremely capable lenses. It's a testament to how far we have come
in the lens world and the camera world, that something with such
fine performance equipment, INCLUDING primes, could be so compact.
There's nothing better than jet travel with minimal weight and mass
to carry! Everything is just .... faster! Faster check-in, faster de-planing
and faster and convenient land travel. That alone increases the joy
factor of a vacation. Very Happy

And a Hektor 4.5/135! Wow! I can imagine that portraits, as well as
landscapes, would have a beautiful look with that particular lens.
And street images in good light? Outstanding, I'm sure.

And back to the Tamron SP 35-80 - that is quite a compact lens too, and
in some circles it's the best 35-80 ever built. Shocked

Nice and fast 180/200 for the 5D ?
I would say without hesitation : Angenieux 70-210mm f:3.5.
For this range, it's light and quality is brilliant. Smile

Yeah and pretty expensive and hard to find. Wink

I'va got a Leica Elmar 4/180 which is good enough for me (I've also got some nice and rather fast tele zoom lenses, but they are too big and heavy for travelling.)
I won't bring the Elmar on my trip to Italy, though, because I will have some chances to try out other lenses Wink and I am not that much of a tele fan anyway.

For my next trip, this setup will work:

EOS 5D MKII
Canon EF 2.8/20-35mm L
Angenieux 2.5-3.3/35-70mm
Canon EF (converted FD) 4/80-200mm L, replaces the Angenieux 70-210mm
Canon EF (converted FD) 1.2/55mm S.S.C Aspherical
Tokina M90 2.5/90mm + 1:1 Extender

My wife will use her EOS 350D with AF Lens, so her cam would be a good backup and teleconverter for my lenses.. Very Happy

So the range of lenses is from 20mm to 320mm and a special lens for avaible light shoot in the evening and macro purposes.

This setup gives me a great flexibility for each thinkable condition..

Cheers
Henry

Thank you, my friend Carsten. I'm still tweaking my kits and haven't found the "perfect kit" yet

Any opinions on the new 35 cron ASPH? They say this version doesn't have the focus shift issues anymore. Since I intend to do street photog in b&w, I might just pick the 35/1.4 nokton for the extra stop .... the new 35 lux is averaging €3K on the used market and a new nokton 35/1.4 MC version sells for around €460. In B&W, I don't care much for the leica bokeh and transition from in focus to oof.

I hope they come out with a NEX full frame bigger sized body with weather-proofing soon - I love my lenses but am sick of incompatible bodies that cost a ton for those 5 extra features that the lower model doesn't have

Hari, I have read a test report about the latest edition of the M-Cron 35 in an LFI, I guess, and yes, they said that it does not suffer from focus shift anymore - a similar development like with the Noctilux versions.

But I agree that a 35mm Voigtländer lens might be the more reasonable choice. Just like you a good friend of mine has decided to buy a Nokton 1.1/50 as his 50mm lens for his M9. It does not have to be Leitz M-glass always. Wink

I was trying for the Noctilux but it went over my budget :/

Click here to see on Ebay.de

The Nokton 50/1.1 is simply the best lens for that money at the moment.

The Sonnar 50/1.5 is a great lens but doesn't tickle my need for something close to the magical f1. Not a logical argument, yes, but this is my hobby not my profession so i'm allowed to be whimsical

I love Leica glass for the small size, build quality, bokeh and the smooth transition from in focus to oof but cmon man, they're really pushing the prices over the sky

Zeiss would have been the next best choice for me but i don't like the oversharp pictures most of them deliver - which is why i still keep the C/Y versions over the newer "better" versions. The new Distagon 35 1.4 seems to hit the spot for me though.

Third in line are the Voigtlanders which are also built quite well and i love the way the 35/1.4 delivers images. I'm between the 35/1.2 and the 35/1.4. Not just half a stop but the way the images are rendered are very different. The fingerprint so to say.

A small body with 15mm + 35mm + 90 mm is all I really need.

As far as i know, only two vendors produce a 35/1.4 lens for te M system - Leica is one and Voigtlander is the second.

I simply love the Heliar 15/4.5. I had the WATE 16-18-21 for a few weeks but sold it as this one set me back by €3,500 and the puny little Heliar 15mm cost me €200. To me, 16-18-21 didn't make a big difference. I shoot @ 15mm maybe a few times a month and the "color shift" issues turned out to be not such a big deal afterall. Slightly smart framing and some light pp usually does the trick very well.

So, long story long, Leica glass is very good but Voigtlander seem to be taking in a very good chunk of market share

I usually take my 5D with me, with a 55mm and 200mm. Often also a film body, with a 28mm. That covers all kinds of scenarios for me.

Kiron 2/28*

Four of those lenses I have new (*) and I will take the chance to test them in Italy. Wink

I also will bring a Minox 35GL with two Voigtländer slide films. Just for the sake of it. Wink
