I owned a Tokina AT-X 100-300mm f/4 SD briefly about 20 years ago, and then let myself get talked out of it by an acquaintance of mine. He sure loved that lens. Mad Ever since I've been shooting MF with my DSLR and have gotten back into shooting film too as a result, I've wanted to replace that lens. Well just a short while ago, I found a good deal on one -- a buy-it-now on eBay amazingly enough!

Click here to see on Ebay

I have a couple of Tamron SD 60-300mm f/3.8-5.4 zooms, and I've always liked this lens. So now, with the Tokina it will be interesting to compare the two. I reckon that, if I don't like it, I'll be able to sell it for at least what I paid for it, and no harm done.

Just picked up a Super-Takumar 50/1.4 v1 for $25 a few days ago.

A couple a weeks ago at a used clothing and item shop I picked up a rather new Canon EF-S 18-55 for $10 and a Tamron SP 500mm f8 mirror with Nikon adapter for $20.

Waiting for the Nikon to EOS adapter to see what it's like. The Canon I'm just trying to sell. Very Happy

You can just get a Tamron Adaptall - EOS adapter too!

I won a 500 sp (type 2) for 100 dollars on Goodwill... but yours sounds a great deal cheaper!

My latest eBay purchase:

A Tokina AT-X 100-300mm f/4 SD. I had to pay $145 for it, which is not exactly cheap, but I typically see this lens selling on eBay in the $250 to $300 range in a popular mount like Nikon, which is what this one is (duh). So, I think the price I got was a very good deal. It didn't come with the hood Sad but the seller promised to look for the hood for me, and I plan to stay in contact with him to hold him to his pledge. Still, I can fit an accessory hood to it for not much money and it'll work just fine.

This is a big, heavy lens! But I don't mind big and heavy. And it's been way too long since I've owned a 300mm f/4 optic.

I've only gotten to do some very limited testing of it so far. Stay tuned, I will post a thread with some more thorough tests made, most likely comparing it with my Tamron SP 60-300mm f/3.8-5.4 and my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6, which are the only other 300mm focal length optics I own at the moment.

My biggest finds have been the following:

User-condition Pentax S2 Super with two 55mm Super-Taks and a 135mm f/3.5 Super-Tak... $75 in an antique shop. Found the hoods for the lenses in a camera store and got them for free.

My F3HP with MD4 motor was free. The motor was dead due to battery corrosion and the owner was going to throw the entire camera in the garbage... which would have been very sad. I cleaned up the motor and it now works like a clock.

Mamiya-Sekor 50mm f/3.5 Macro E, with 1:1 extension... $20 in an antique shop, buried in a box full of slide projector lenses! I have since modified this lens for use on my Nikons either reversed or on a homemade bellows.

And my favorite:

Nikon Series E 75-150mm f/3.5... $16 in a junk bin at my local camera shop. It's almost perfect, has no marks on the glass, the zoom is not loose, and it makes really wonderful photographs.

Astounding. So, if it ain't AF, it's gotta be junk, is the mentality of your local camera shop?

Wacom Intuos4 Wireless A4 size, Photoshop Elements 8.0 and Adobe Lightroom bundled together for EUR 400 new in shop. Not the biggest bargain ever, but certainly January's best value for something bought new

Brand new it would appear - certainly the seal on the box is intact..

14.99 for Spyder Pro? I'm liking it!

They also had a nice Super Tak 28,, f3.5 for $4.99 and a Canon S2is for a few dollars.. I bought both... Smile

Doug that's quite a Goodwill fishin' hole you've found up there. Wish the one over by me carried anything remotely as interesting.

It's odd - there are two within a couple of miles of one another- one has great stuff at low prices, the other over-priced junk like kenko M42 x2 converters for 60 dollars!!!

I reckon you'd better hope the two people who price their stuff don't ever compare notes. Cool

You probably will find one would be pricing the items as the name of the store suggests "goodwill" and not for profit? Some charity type stores forget what they are there for....that's if I am understanding correctly that they are a charity store for the poor??

I have a love/ hate relationship to this thread Laughing

I love when people do a good deal, but I hate when they got one of my newly purchased lenses for bread crumbs Very Happy

Your notions are right -- more or less. Goodwill is an old US charity, but it functions more as an outreach organization, helping the "underserved" find jobs, etc. They have outlet stores across the country that sell items received as donations, and this is the major source of their revenue.

Mo.. if only! lol

Often they seem to think (as do so many deluded Craig's List sellers) that some old point and shoot Canon is worth 50 dollars, then they have a Spyder 2 pro for 15 dollars or a Yashica T4 for... 12!!!

There seems nither rhyme nor reason to their wayward pricing, I just take what I can find! Smile

Why doesn't that store post all the "good" stuff online like all the other Goodwills?

I only find "broken" (Laughing) gear or stuff too big to ship. Camera deals are few and far between, but they're out there...

PostPosted: Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:55 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Oddly some of the best deals online are also in the NW, from Tacoma Goodwill and Columbia Willamette!

Maybe there is a secret cult of photographers out here who prophesied the coming of sunshine, and having been found out for the frauds they are, are now busy ditching the evidence? lol
