I had seen this old dusty Preset Takumar 200 f3.5 with its aperture leaves popping loose -they had marked it for $65.00. This was in a communal consignment antique store. I offered them $20.00 ,and left them my number and mentioned to them that it would cost me to repair the aperture.
I got a call today saying the owner was willing to sell it- so I picked it up.

I cleaned the outer elements ,dusted and cleaned the body with Windex. I diligently worked the aperture blades back into the empty slots-and put a few drops of naphtha in the nest while it was wide open. I played around with the aperture blades and they open and close beautifully. It indicates F4 when fully open.-that's a project for another day. I noticed the body had some marks of fungal excretion-which will not go away right now-I tried cleaning it with alcohol, Windex ,vinegar, and thymol creme and let it sit in the sun. I am going to go take some pictures with this later-maybe post some images-too.

This ended up being a very good deal for me(20 bucks and some love for lenses Very Happy ,is it love or preoccupation ?) -preset 200mm f3.5s are rare beasts regardless.

Last aperture blade going into slot.

Well, 20$ for a nice half day tinkering, thats not too expensive for a hobby! Might be a very nice user at the end, still more fun. Waiting for samples, really curious what is possible with the old lens.

CZJ Biotar 58/2 for $23au...the postage was half of the cost so about $12au.
It is out getting an overhaul so when it is all up and running perfectly it won't be such a bargain Laughing

Just a start: Hanimar 135mm f/3.5 M42 with a 15-blade aperture, for US $9 shipped.
"Old New Stock" as purchased. Pristine; never used.
Still in original wrapper and box.
Features leatherette focus barrel grip, and polished aluminum bevels
on the barrel edges.

Soligor(Tokina-made) 75-260mm M42, complete with a protective case, for US $39.
Arrived in the protective case, and included a Soligor/Tokina 135 f/2.8 T-4 with fungus.
I used the 135 as a testbed for disassembly, cleaning and reassembly.
The 75-260 looks as new, inside and out.

Soligor(Tokina-made) 400mm f/6.3 T-4/M42.
Nearly-pristine cosmetically, no flaws to be found optically.
Looks like it's only been used a few times.
Total cost: US $49 shipped.

Tamron SP 60-300 f/3.8-5.4
Loose mechanical operation in the zoom action, but cosmetics are pristine.
Glass, coatings and barrel grips are as new. Better copies of this lens
regularly sell for well over US $150, so I really stole it for just $49,
and I was very lucky.
Total cost: US $49 shipped.

I've owned a few of these. One had an internal ring come loose, and I was able to dismantle it and effect the repair. As zooms go, it was pretty easy to work on. You might give it a try. Chances are it's probaby just one or two screws that have come loose a bit.

Over all, though, I've found the Tamron 60-300 to be a rugged optic, and have taken many great shots with mine.

Indeed, this lens is very well made and durable.
I honestly doubt it's anything that's come loose inside; there's no unusual play, and it all works as it should. My copy simply suffers from a very loose 'creep' action to the zoom function. I'd like to dampen it somehow, but the general concensus is that this lens just gets loose with age. I'd rather use it horizontally, than risk damaging it by uneducated disassembly. Wink

Hmmm . . . well, that hasn't been my experience. The one I bought new back in about 1985 and sold after about five years of use had very little creep. I remember that it would slowly creep in one direction but woudn't creep at all in the other. Funny thing, both of the ones I own now exhibit the same behavior. Neither are loose, however. The one zoom that comes to mind as being well-known for zoom looseness is the old Nikkor 80-200 f/4.5. I have one, and there is essentially no resistance from one end of the zoom range to the other. But that is considered par for the course with that lens. I'll use a wide rubber band or tape if I need to hold it in place. Kinda annoying, I suppose, but it works.

I guess my trend these days is that I'm finding great bargains in more expensive ranges.... nothing like the "3x Zuiko legends at obscene prices" I got a while ago. Here's my latest:

Hassie 501CM
CFE 80/2.8 Planar
CFi 50/4 FLE Distagon
CB 160/4.8 Tessar
PM45 prism
WLF
2* A12

All made around 2002.

All of this, all in Excellent++ to Like New condition, for $1700.

That doesn't sound cheap... until you do the calculation and find that to get the same set in the same condition *used* on Ebay, you'd be paying double that. Not to mention how much it'd cost new Smile

Not that great a bargain compared to yard sales finds in the US maybe, but the Polaroid 230 I got on Sunday for 15€ at a flea market is in pristine condition, with mint bellows, its strap still wrapped by a Polaroid sticker, the original manual, and the Polaroid accessory for developing prints in cold weather (two curved squares of metal labeled Polaroid). After a battery conversion it works great.

I could probably have bargained it down to 10€, but on ebay I would have payed about the same for shipping alone, and probably gotten a camera in pretty awful condition. Now my only problem is I'm out of FP-3000B film...

Heh. Not bad at all, especially considering that outfit set the original owner back some $10,000 when it was new. I kid you not.

I believe it. When I first got it, I was thinking about selling the PM45 prism to make back some of the cost since I've never used prisms with my Hasselblad, so I went online to see how much they're going for, and was blown away that samples in the same condition (pretty much like new) were going for $500-ish. Then, I was absolutely floored to see how much the prism costs new ($1200-ish).

Of course, as usual, I ended up not selling it because once I took a look inside it, I understood, at least *some*, of *why* people would pay that kind of money for it. The 2.5x magnification unreversed image through the viewfinder was like a visual drug Laughing

How about Olympus Zuiko 500/8 (mirror lens) for $166? Excellent condition but inscribed with inventory number by the previous owner (the number is scratched into the lens barrel). I guess this turned collectors away from this lens Smile

Decent one for me imo - Komine-made 8 bladed (?!) Vivitar 2.8/135 in mint condition (*zero* paint chipping or pitting) for $20USD.

Two weeks ago I got the following Nikon lenses from the local online ads:

20mm F4 non-AI with factory AI ring
35mm F2 Nikkor-O non-AI with factory AI ring
105mm F2.5 AI
50mm F1.4 Nikkor SC non-AI
50mm F2 AI
50mm F1.8 series E
35-70mm F3.3-4.5 AIs

for a total of $350. I was really just looking for the 20, 35 and 105. And then, the buyer threw in three camera bodies, a black FG, a black Nikkormat FTN and an EM with a broken rewind crank. The EM will probably be thrown out after I remove a few parts from it - the bottom plate will fit an FG, the lens mount can be used for hacking lenses, etc. However, I checked the FG and Nikkormat and they work just fine. Both their meters give accurate readings and, in the case of the Nikkormat, there is no dreaded jumpy needle syndrome, so they will be good companions for the chrome FG and Nikkormat I already own. I know it's not as great a deal as finding a motorized SP labelled as a point and shoot for the price of a cup of coffee, but I'm happy.

Sweet deal. I've seen the old 20mm f/4 UD go for almost that much on eBay. You can prolly sell off the three 50s and zoom and recoop at least half your expenses.
