When uploading files from camera to computer, I always rename them and include the date, the name of the cam and lens.
For renaming, I use Canon's Eos software DPP (Digital Photography Professional) : very quick and easy.
For P&P, editing and printing, I use Lightroom 4.
Then, when searching for samples from a specific lens, I just have to do a file search.
Like Moïra, I'd like to see some South Afrika pictures. |
thanks oliver, it does make sense and would help me, currently I have close to 80 gigs of photos that need to be sorted through, it makes me realise how important cataloging is. |

Guess this nice Ebay-find qualifies for the bargain section:
Just received a fine lens package, I've bought for 21,50€ + postage.
Including a 1936 Schneider Tele-Xenar f:5,5 F=18cm for Kochmann Reflex-Korelle, adapted to Primarflex, a 1929 Zeiss Tessar 1:6,3 f=10,5cm bayonet-mounted in a focussing mount, never seen this mount. And an unmarked lens of an old plate camera F8 (-F64), approx 25cm +/-. may be a Petzval type lens with two glasses at each end. Will get it in a shutter, when finding one that will fit with some adaptation ring and try it.
Your thoughts about the Tessar and the unmarked lens?

All fine lenses, the 28/2.5 may be Minoltas sharpest 28. Any of those lenses would be a bargain at £27 but the 250/5.6 is an insane bargain.

It's not a lens or a camera, but I just got a Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED for $200. I got it at a garage sale. The guy didn't know what it was (I think it belonged to his father or mother). He was practically giving it away and I just couldn't give him what he was asking - I told him what it was really worth and his answer was "People still shoot film? Really??"... so he was happy to take what I paid. It's still less than 10% of the one I see is on eBay tonight.

I managed to find a damaged Nikon D800E for about $650 USD/470 EUR in Tokyo recently.
It had been dropped. The P, A, S modes don't work, but M mode does. (perhaps it's been set to manual exposure only, but I haven't figured out what to change yet!)
AF works (at the moment I can only get spot mode to work), and liveview works. All other functions seem to be ok.
It should be a good platform for MF lenses. |

I did and was quite surprised. Even though many of these are really good my plan is to sell them to found an m-mount lens. I am shooting
mirrorless and like to keep it small. Still the mirrorlens is almost to small to me since I don't have in body stabilitation in my camera. So anyone interested can find at our swedish auktion-site. _________________ "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

I'm trying look in places where less (or no) bargains hunters are around than in places like Ebay (to go boldly... if you will), I've found most of my Minolta stuff on smaller sites for classifieds and the rest with persistent low bidding on Ebay. It's not much work if you use bid-sniping software ("bid-o-matic" works well) and place very low maximum bids on a large number of auctions. That way you only win a very small part of all the auctions you're bidding on but when you do you get great deals.
These are all from the ginormous collection of an old (and recently deceased) Hobby-Astronomer/Astrophotographer, one of his fellow clubmembers (he was one of the founders and their "optics-guru") took it upon himself to sell the whole heap for the family (the family apparently didn't give a f*** and just wanted the house cleared of hundreds of lenses, cameras and telescopes).
The old guy built his own Telescopes from salvaged lens elements (some lens elements with diameters >20cm, I have no idea where he got those) and picked up loads of soviet equipment while travelling through Eastern Europe after 1989 (i.e. more than 50 Pentacon-six lenses from east german and russian manufacturers like Zeiss and KMZ, all in mint condition)
If the collection had been sold off with more thought, it could probably have yielded 50000-10000€.
I haven't even mentioned all of MY purchases yet, here's the rest of the more valuable ones:
- Kiron MC 24mm f/2 (Pentax K, mint with case) bought for 20, sold for 125.
- Tokina SL 17mm f/3.5 (Pentax K, mint) bought for 25.
- Zenitar 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye (Pentax K, mint with case) bought for 25€ <--- He had about 20 of those, all mint!!!
- Vivitar Series 1 28mm f/1.9 (M42, the aperture was stuck wide open but I fixed it) bought for 10, sold for 75.
I was rather disappointed when we DIDN'T find an 'Iron Throne' made of lenses in the attic... _________________ Sony: A7 | Samyang FE 35/2.8 | Sony FE 85/1.8

I have some spare time and while reading other threads recalled this story.
I have a slight inclination to sub-gauge cine cameras and during the years have accumulated a few bodies, lenses and the paraphernalia. A few years before the mirrorless bodies started to be a fad, I bought a Bolex BL -body from an online ad (not fleabay). For the sales pic the seller had mounted two long barrel objectives, a third party low power tele and a fixed focus japanese wide lens, also third party. So, no d-mount Kern lenses and condition of the camera otherwise unknown. Paid a few euros for it. I received the package and found the camera running and in OK condition. Later I also refurbished the freezed tele. But the brown and beaten camera bag gave me a surprise. Two more d-mounts in the pocket. A short barrel Walz telephoto, f 1.4. It is coated and has a unique rendition of colours to my eye. The other one was a Zunow 13mm f 1.1 prime and the case for it. Lens had some signs of use on the barrel, but after I gave it a CLA it performs great on a Pentax Q with an adapter.
I don't expect to find another surprise like that anytime soon.. |

OK, today was the Maytime markets at my grandchildren's primary school.
We had other things to do first, so arrived late at the school where the Markets (School Fete) was being held.
After walking around for a solid hour looking for them decided to phone my son to see where they were - they hadn't arrived yet!
What to do?
Off to the white elephant stall.
There was a plethora of stuff, and right at the back on the last table, this bag. It had sat there all morning at $50 and was marked down to $40 as the stall wanted to clear items.
I didn't even open it.
Paid my $40 and took it out into the light to see what it held.

Edited - My typo fingers had a dyslexic attack and transposed the numbers.
Instead of a 2.8/35 it was a 3.5/28 Nikkor

Ya did good! A nice FE outfit, with a black FE no less, for approximately the value of the 43-86. What a deal! The zoom is not held in particular high regard because of its softness, although I've heard more than one photographer remark that this "feature" makes it a good portrait lens.
Which model motor drive is it? The MD-11 and MD-12 are equivalent, performance-wise, but if an MD-11, one needs to remember to turn off the motor drive after use, or it will drain the batteries. _________________ Michael

Here we go.

1.4/50 Nikkor
3.5/28 Nikkor
3.5/43-86 Nikkor
Nikon Speedlight and sundries.
Here's the piccie:
Edited - My typo fingers had a dyslexic attack and transposed the numbers.
Instead of a 2.8/35 it was a 3.5/28 Nikkor
All fixed now.

Thank you both for the happy thoughts.
The motor drive is MD-12. The previous owner had been careful enough to remove all batteries - I am grateful for the thoughtfulness.
Interestingly the box contained two receipts - one in Arabic that I cannot read from Riyadh dated 1981 and the other for a Nizo 156 bought at Bonsers of Bigg Market in 1975. No Nizo though Haha
