There is a Paulownia tomentosa that is growing not distant from my home, in a very strange place, from the bottom of the torrent reinforcement, near the bridge.
It is all flowering so I thought it could be nice to photograph.
I took with me the Tessar 40mm and the Jena Sonnar 4/135 (also aluminium).

Here's the shots with the Tessar 40:

Tessar 4.5/40 stopped down

Tessar 4.5/40 wide open

Tessar 4.5/40 wide open

Tessar 4.5/40 wide open

Camera used is the 5D.

I admit it: I am very impressed by this lens.

If you look at the bricks in #1, you can guess how clear the output is, even from such a small resize.
It is so easy to get muddy output from old wideangles.
Note:it's a 50s lens, probably uncoated, or at best, single coated.

Impressive!

Time now for another little champ, the Jena Sonnar 4/135 aluminium.
In my personal opinion, it is better than the later, multicoated 3.5/135.
It is sharp just the same, but the overall impression is rounder and less harsh than with the 3.5/135.
But I let you see:

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 - wide open

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 - stopped down

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 - stopped down

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 - slightly stopped down

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 - stopped down

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 - slightly stopped down

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 - wide open

It matches today's Leicas for image clarity - even wide open.
I am curious to make a head-to-head with my Elmarit-R 35

Good lens but not better than MC or zebra in my opinion.

And to finish, yet another one from the Tessar 40:

Carl Zeiss Yena Tessar 4.5/40 - stopped down

Both are excellent performers, really like that Tessar 40 (last pic)!

Nice photos as usual, Orio. Like the #7.
I've got the same lens recently and I could not tell the difference between this and MC version.
Wondered what zebra is like... then ..

Here's some 100% unsharpened crops from the first Tessar 40 picture:

For my personal standard, something more than a good lens.
Wide open:

yeah, that Tessar is a killer lens. Of the two, there was something about
the shots from that lens (first set) that really piqued my interest. Not to
say the Sonnar is a bad lens, oh no.

The second set from the Tessar, good God! Shocked

Amazing, eh?
I was speechless when I first saw them.

It's built like a tank, really. The aperture is of the continuous kind, and you can be sure that it will never break (I am a big fan of the continuous apertures).
It is solid metal, the Jena factory at the time was still building things like Zeiss should build. The cheap materials of later Jena lenses are a different thing. I think you may drop this one from a second floor and it still might work.

Orio

How do you find these gems? That Tessar is a definite classic - on to keep and use often. Those 100% samples!

Really, it's luck. And of course, I follow this type of auctions constantly. That is how I could buy a Primagon 35mm for 15 Euros. The key is not to hurry and wait for a good occasion. I have paid this Tessar more, but, after I discovered what the 3.5/50 can do, I am really fond of these old Tessars. I too, however, pick lenses that are not fully exciting. The Tessar 2.8/50, for instance, is not as good as this lens...

I just took first shots with my Tessar 50/2,8 and was quite disappointed. Not a patch on the Pancolar.
