There is a Paulownia tomentosa that is growing not distant from my home, in a very strange place, from the bottom of the torrent reinforcement, near the bridge.
It is all flowering so I thought it could be nice to photograph.
I took with me the Tessar 40mm and the Jena Sonnar 4/135 (also aluminium).

I admit it: I am very impressed by this lens.

If you look at the bricks in #1, you can guess how clear the output is, even from such a small resize.
It is so easy to get muddy output from old wideangles.
Note:it's a 50s lens, probably uncoated, or at best, single coated.

Time now for another little champ, the Jena Sonnar 4/135 aluminium.
In my personal opinion, it is better than the later, multicoated 3.5/135.
It is sharp just the same, but the overall impression is rounder and less harsh than with the 3.5/135.
But I let you see:

Nice photos as usual, Orio. Like the #7.
I've got the same lens recently and I could not tell the difference between this and MC version.
Wondered what zebra is like... then ..

yeah, that Tessar is a killer lens. Of the two, there was something about
the shots from that lens (first set) that really piqued my interest. Not to
say the Sonnar is a bad lens, oh no.

wow! the 100% crop are more than impressive, and 40mm is a interesting focal even on crop dslr
how is the mechanical construction, is the aperture mechanism ok

It's built like a tank, really. The aperture is of the continuous kind, and you can be sure that it will never break (I am a big fan of the continuous apertures).
It is solid metal, the Jena factory at the time was still building things like Zeiss should build. The cheap materials of later Jena lenses are a different thing. I think you may drop this one from a second floor and it still might work.

Really, it's luck. And of course, I follow this type of auctions constantly. That is how I could buy a Primagon 35mm for 15 Euros. The key is not to hurry and wait for a good occasion. I have paid this Tessar more, but, after I discovered what the 3.5/50 can do, I am really fond of these old Tessars. I too, however, pick lenses that are not fully exciting. The Tessar 2.8/50, for instance, is not as good as this lens...

I just took first shots with my Tessar 50/2,8 and was quite disappointed. Not a patch on the Pancolar.
