I'm quite impressed with the 70-210 3.5 SP so was wondering what was the best short zoom they produced. Many years back I owned the non-SP 35-70 and wasn't impressed but haven't tried any of the SP models.

Anyone?

Generally all Tamron SP lenses are very good.

I have following Tamron SP wide zooms:

1) Tamron SP 28-80mm
2) Tamron SP 35-80mm
3) Tamron SP 24-48mm

You can see pictures with above lenses in mflenses.com/gallery

SP 24-48 very rare others are common lens.

I found the SP 35-80 excellent, and only started using the SP 28-80 for the extra bit of wideness. So far I've found it to be on a par with the 35-80.

I have a non-SP 35-70 with macro capabilities, that I bought after Bill's recommendation.
It is a nice lens, not a champion but very sharp stopped down and the macro ability is very nice. Also for the price it is normally sold (in the range 15-30 euros) you just can't go wrong.

Thanks folks. I'll probably try the first SP Zoom I find that's cheap and comes with a Nikon mount already attached.

These are not a Tamron SP lenses, but I really like the Soligor C/D Zoom+Macro 3.8-5.3/35-200 MC (Nikon mount)...

...and the Sigma Zoom-0 II 3.5-4.5/28-85 MC (M42):

And if you need something wider, the Hoya HMC 3.5/25-42 Zoom&Macro might be worth considering.

I bought the SP 35-80 2.8-3.8 CF new in '85, and I've loved it ever since.

I'm on my 3rd mount (OM, Nikon AI, now Pentax KA) and it's worked beautifully with each. Recently I did some comparisons vs. modern primes and zooms, and feel this lens is closer to a Pentax Limited than the Pentax 16-45.

Wow! Close to a Pentax limited lens ?! This means this lens a super bargain!

LOL, closER to... maybe I have a poor sample of the 16-45 but the 35-80 embarrasses it.

Just to be confusing and because of the nikon mount - try to look for a Kiron 28-85. In my view it's one of the best in its range

Well I've just won the SP 28-80 complete with Nikon mount for 21.05 USD even with shipping it seems a good price. We shall see what it does when it arrives...

For this price everything should be accepted , lens was free on this price.
I had in the past, it wasn't catch me, not good not bad very neutral to me.

Some sample with the one my brother has, mounted on EOS 5D (warning, BIG files):

Nota bene: the vigneting of first picture is due to the wrong sun hood fitted. It's a rubber Tamron's with bayonet that mount perfectly on that lens but was not conceived for it Surprised

Thanks for everyone's opinions and samples. I'm not a great zoom user but I'm occasionally finding occasions where one would be useful. At the price I paid the lens was essentially free with the mount so I'm not too worried whether it suits me or not. It will be fun giving it a go.

Orio, I thought you were going to pitch that back on ebay! I feel better now,
I remember you weren't impressed with its corner sharpness on your 5D.

I have this lens plus the SP 35-80 like both of them on my 2x crop Oly e300. YMMV, of course.
