"Midsummer Night Spectacle"

After some years of "weather-break" the traditional midsummer night
celebration on the mountain-groups of "Leoganger Steinberge" and
"Steinernes Meer" took place again yesterday.

Some hundreds of mountaineers inflamed bags with wood shavings
combined with paraffin which enlightened the skies for about 30-60 minutes.
All these volunteers are the elite of well trained mountain climbers
and guides. Some of them sleep up on the mountains, some
take the way back in the night ...

Fabulous +1 on everything that's said already...

Meanwhile, is it just my eyes or do others see the stereoscopic 3-D in #3? To me that is an amazing effect... Look at the two men on the left.

beautiful tradition very beautifully recorded and presented, thank you for that!
I like the first for showing the full setting, the third photo is like "home" in a fairy tale, the last spectacular

#1 for me. The scale of things from the "ground" view really provides a nice context.
I see a bit of trouble with balancing exposure in the sky. Easily overlooked considering the story this image tells.
Fascinating set overall. I guess for those mountaineers who stayed in the mountain overnight it was a short sleep anyway.
How late does darkness arrive and sun rise this time of year? Here the sun sets about 21:00. It is beginning to be light again by 4:30.

Yes, exposure was hard to set in the skies; if one exposes too much the fires are hardly noticed,
if exposed slightly to less the foreground is darkened and destroys the whole pano.
I was little too much with exposure ...
maybe a slight ND grad would have been the solution, but that's hard to use in combination with stiching.
- a "multi shutter panorama" would have been another solution ... next year ... Laughing

I guess so Wink
sun sets here at 22:00h, that's when the lights started too. They shoot a signal-rocket as a
cue to light the fires.

Don't ask me when sun rises these days, I wake up usually too late Wink
