What a beautiful piece of metal and glass. I have it complete with hood and case.
I gave it a try on the Olympus Pen E-P2 where 135mm = 270mm.

Beautiful indeed, both the pictures and the lens itself. It looks huge with the hood however. Is the hood mandatory? How's flair resistance?

I used to dream of owning the 35mm F 2.8 Macro Quinaron, the 50mm F 1.9 Quinon, the 100mm F 3.5 Quinar, and 135mm F 4.0 Quinar lenses when I was a kid. I am glad you own and use 1/4 of my dream set. An early photo mentor of mine, who used a Nikon F professionally as a photojournalist, talked me out of it, because he did not want me to use a "crappy Exakta body" just to use those lenses (Exakta mount was the most common mount available for the lens set, and the RTL 1000 Body was the current Exakta body at the time was was thinking of buying).

All water under the bridge now-might still get the set and use them on my 5D someday:)

Thank you Fermy and Patrickh.

Hood is useful but not mandatory.

Ansco, I'm really please with this 25% of your favourite set. It is M42 mount and has a tripod screw mount.

Here are some links to this lens' samples :

Beautiful lens and results.

I had the 3.5 version. There is a smaller Steinheil hood for these, I had one:

Ian, your exakta version is quite different.

Mine is a M42 preset lens.
I'm wondering what VL means in its name ? Steinheil München Quinar 1:2.8 f=135mm VL Nr 864883.

Yes, quite different indeed.

I think the VL is a coating designation.

VL : maybe a german equivalence of MC ?
Rolf ?

Ian, do you have some samples with your Exakta one ?

I only have a very few HDR shots with it, sadly. I needed money so sold it, but it was a very good lens, the quality of construction and the machining of all the parts was amazing.

It seems so.

As far as I know "VL" was the symbol of Steinheil for their lens coating. I found an old folder cam (around 1930) with an old Steinheil lens with this mark too. This coating must be therefore pre-war - maybe improved over the years.

You will find it also at binoculars Steinheil produced too. I´m not sure but since Steinheil changed their lenses from the silver to black and/or zebra versions you will find no longer the "VL" mark.

You will find similar with other brand names too, like Canon S.S.C or Zuiko MC. Older lens have these marks, newer ones not because the coating was standard then.

or Nikkor S.C Smile
I have a Nikkor S.C 50mm f:1.4 and a Nikkor S.C 55mm f:1.2
Coating of the 50mm is blue, and 55mm's is pink.
