I photographed yesterday 2 interesting small spots on clouds which I have never seen so far. There was about 2 hours inbetween foto 1 and 2. A small rainbow shape is visible inside the cloudes.
Unfortunately I had only my Flektogon 20mm with me ...

excellent capture, #1 is also great picture for the cloud itself (regardless of rainbow)

well for rainbow you need diffraction by water particles, so I'm not a scientist but I think clouds are likely places for rainbow to happen (when the other conditions are present of course).

yes this is very true what you say. Coulds are in principal small particles of rain.
I was also thinking why it does not happen more often this kind of phenomena, because cloudes are all around and sun too ...

It seems to be a part of halo, called 'sundogs'

It's best known as Parhelia. Very nice. I saw it only twice in my life Smile

thanks shauttra and no-x

I looked up in wiki ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog

"Sundogs are formed by plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds or, during very cold weather, by ice crystals called diamond dust drifting in the air at low levels. These crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them by 22°. If the crystals are randomly oriented, a complete ring around the sun is seen — a halo. But often, as the crystals sink through the air they become vertically aligned, so sunlight is refracted horizontally — in this case, sundogs are seen... "

Wow, amazing to see this from the ground. I saw a similar phenomenon from an aeroplane of a 360 degree rainbow/halo? This is a terrible photo through a greasy window:
