This is the wagon (as captured by the Elmarit-R 35):

And this is the crew - which is also the occasion for introducing to you my new lens, a Planar 1.2/85, which I found at a very good price thanks to a cleaning mark
on the front glass which luckily does not affect the performance visibly - but allowed me to save a lot of money !

Selene:

a crop:

Guy at the grill (unknown name).
Big focus miss here, only visible at small size:

Left to right: Yasmine, younger sister (unknown name), Selene:

crop (focus perfect here, yippie!):

Maverick, the cousin:

crop (sorry, a bit of motion blur here Sad - and high noise due to exposure recovery):

Thanks! This is a big compliment, thank you !!

Actually, it's the best compliment I ever received here. I'm so happy because what you said, it is my goal. Thanks again!

Congrats on the Planar! Looks like a very happy place to work with all
the smiles and antics: emotion + atmosphere. The one girl with the
double peace sign fingers looks more Russian than Italian, of course,
this is northern Italy, too. I'm struck by their lighter complexions (and
Sophia, you are still beautiful, OK? Laughing )

Forgot to add, you can't beat how Zeiss does color.

What a superb lens and a masterly presentation of your favourite "scenes", featuring people. Thanks Orio

Very nice captures! And of course it's good to see a little bit of Holland in Italy, even though Heineken isn't that good of a beer Laughing

Thanks Bill. Native people here looks much different from the Southern look that you usually associate with Italian.
The food wagon family is native of a small village near Parma.
About Sofia Loren, she is the age of my mother Shocked 76! Laughing
If you like the Mediterranean beauty, it's time to update your references Laughing
search for Monica Bellucci and Manuela Arcuri Wink

poilu, to speak sincerely, after having used this lens a bit, I don't see all that practical advantage in a f1.2/85 over a f1.4/85
ok it's a half stop more but with today's digital cameras good high ISO performance, that extra half stop isn't that needed anymore.

The 1.2 Planar gives a very different look than the 1.4
It has smoother bokeh and lower contrast, it looks more like a Japanese lens than German, if you know what I mean.
I'm sure that Canon people and Takumar people would love it because it creates images very Canon/Pentax like.
I think I personally still prefer the classic 1.4 Planar look.

One thing where this lens has a definite edge over the 1.4 is sharpness.
The 1.2 is unbelievably sharp, it cuts your eyes.
Also like Bill noticed, colour rendition is very natural.

I'm not keen on bokeh games so I won't use the f 1.2 much, but it's nice to know it's there if needed.

But overall, to speak sincerely, I don't think this lens is worth the huge amount of money it is usually sold for.

I got mine for about 1000 Euros less than the normal used price of this lens. If I had to buy it again I'm not sure I would, it was a bit of a craziness,
given how I am happy with the 1.4 Planar. I was afraid to miss that occasion because I know there will not be one more with that price for a long time.
For sure I would never spend that extra 1000 Euros in any case.

Yeah, I am sure you have a lot of better beers there than Heineken.
Unfortunately what goes to foreign, in case of food, is the big brands, not the small brands which usually mean better quality.
This is a bit true everywhere.
So to taste real Holland beer I will have to go to Amsterdam
(been there but only in the airport)

Heineken can beer tastes like aluminium, it terrible Sad
Also I think that the one that is sold here it's not even made in Holland, I think it's made by a local factory which works on behalf of Heineken.
(same as Coca Cola)

It's not the perfect lens however.
It has more lateral CA than the 1.4/85 and differently from the 1.4, you can not shoot it without a hood - in spite of the T* coating, the huge sized front glass makes you pay the due in that respect.

PostPosted: Mon Feb 22, 2010 5:17 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

No lens is perfect Smile
But I have to say that my copy seems to be different in regards of CA, perhaps a difference between the "50" and "60 Years" edition, or a misaligned element, I don't know.

@Orio, very, very nice presentation and quality! Beautiful people and scene captured beautifully!

re: Heiniken is good lager (in bottles only) but difficult to find fresh. Lager must be stored cold, at 5C or less and not frozen, otherwise quickly develops bad skunky smell and taste. Fresh Heiniken is delicious!

I have had professionally printed at medium size (20x30 cm) some of the photos here, plus some older ones, which I have to give to the food wagon owner.

I have to say - wow! - the 5D and 5DII images + my Contax lenses make simply perfect prints! Shocked I did not expect them SO good. Totally smooth (with regards to noise) and totally sharp (with regards to detail) at 20x30 cm. And mostly, alive and brilliant - just like looking at the monitor!

The king of printed performance is the Planar 1.2/85. The portrait of the three girls jumps out of the paper, in spite of the rather crappy neon lighting.
3D effect where I did not expect to see one! Shocked

I think I will have happy customers Very Happy

Glad to hear, I have to print some of my carnaval images too! Smile

I started my digital printing few weeks ago and yes, it's a complete different thing, seeing the image on the monitor or as a final print.
