Welcome and nice set I must say.

As someone that has never tried macro rings before, here comes some rookie questions :

Is M42 macro rings general and suitable for all M42 lenses? How to choose macro rings? Which ones are better?

Thanks!
I think there is no big difference between macro rings. I have russian and Hama M42 rings in different lenght (total lenght of rings is 100mm)

Wow! I rarely saw such great macros with a normal tele lens.

M42 extension tubes (aka macro rings) are just hollow pieces of pipe with female M42 threads at one end and male M42 threads at the other; it works for every M42 lens and there's no optical difference (no glass elements). Some tubes support auto aperture (i.e. they relay the aperture pin), so that's pretty much the only factor in compatibility if you are using an M42 film body… Adapted cameras don't support the automatic aperture anyhow, so no difference there.

In build quality there can be some slight differences, mostly in the feel and weight. Many of the cheap tubes are made by the same manufacturer, however; I have many sets with the different brand names (Dixons, Stitz, Prinzflex) and all are obviously the same tubes. So I'd just choose based on cheap price (under 10 EUR for set of three tubes totalling about 50-60mm).

(Remember that to reach 1:1 macro the lens must have as much extension as the focal length of the lens is, i.e. 50mm lens needs 50mm of extension for 1:1. Not all extension needs to come from tubes, however; the close focusing capability of the lens itself also helps.)

Very nice, did you use the full 100mm of extension tubes for #2?

M42 ext tubes are cheap so it's worth getting at least one set, if not more.

If you like macro work, consider a set of bellows as these can be found cheaply for M42 mounts. Also good for enlarger lenses.

I use 2x TC and macro rings in following order - camera-TC(M42)-macro rings (as long as possible)-lens (135mm)
