Hungarian Gladiators

At the Centuriations Market in Villadose there was a group of Hungarian gladiator acts re-enlivement performers.
The group is called Familia Gladiatoria Pannonica and you can find them on the web also. They take part to these historical re-enlivements all over Europe.
They performed the whole two days in several acts. People enjoyed them much. They were really hitting hard! A couple of times two of the guys injured themselves with blood. Even if not sharpened, the blades can still cut. And the shields do hurt!.
There were three women in the group, and they did not spare themselves at all.
Audience enjoyed a lot and at the end of each fight we were called to show thumb up or down to decide if the loser should be "killed" or not

I took pictures from various set, and I used various lenses: Elmarit-R 35, Distagon Hollywood 2/28, Distagon 2.8/25, Elmarit-R 90, and two cameras, EOS 50D and EOS 5DMkII. You find lens and camera specifications in each picture.

The most amazing part was the blind fight.
The two fighters wore blind helmets. This is an historically documented procedure (all the weapons and armors they used, are historically correct. For instance, the curved sword was a Tracean (today Bulgarian) weapon. Tracean was one of the four common fighting styles in the arena).

The two guys made a really scary blind fight, and one of them almost fell upon a spectator. After this fact, they did not repeat it anymore, because it was too dangerous, as spectators were not separated from the fighters.

I like the 90mm shots the best.
The colours are great in all shots, but in the wide angle shots the deep DoF is a little disturbing. Well... the problem of wide angles.

Perhaps with the Hollywood wide open and a grey filter?

I have my 13" laptop in Paris so not easy to view
the 25 show no distortion and saturated colors
the hollywood more true life colors
the elmarit 35 need a double hood to improve contrast
the elmarit 90 show nice colors and resolution crops are impressive
wide angle show the place, the atmosphere
90 mm show small crop not explicit of the whole environment
best is to go near with a wide angle, not easy with those curved swords

Wonderful shots and great lenses. There were also somehistorical re-enlivements in our city, and many italian warriors joined them. I also took many photos, but they were not comparable to your shots.

Wonderful series for subjects and lenses. Those two modern lens clan
have different tonality, very interesting. This time I prefer Elmarit shots,
Zeiss' are dramatic but shades are a bit too dark for my taste. But love
28/2 shots.

Looks like a fun outing - but what difficult lighting. You really did a great job of mastering that dynamic range of shadow vs very bright sunlight. I suspect that earlier in the day + earlier in the year it would have been almost impossible.
