MF Lens Aperture order different from new Lens

Hello everybody,

can someone tell me why the aperture order from the old lenses is different from the new ones?

For example:

Mir-1B Aperture Number 16 is like the smallest Aperture Number on a new lens (f.e. 2.8 or 1.4)

So the Aperture Numbers are like "upside down" on the new lenses in comparison to the old ones.

Can anybody tell me how that comes?

Best regards,

Michael

I'm sorry, I don't understand your question, what do you mean by "new lens"?

Aperture numbers are standard and are the same since the inception of photography. The smaller number indicates the wider aperture, and obviously, the larger number indicates the narrower aperture.

Hello Orio,

I mean the following.
On my MIR or Helios Lens, when I set the aperture to 16 it's wide open.
On my Canon 50 1.4 I have to set aperture to 1.4 to have it wide open.

No, that's not true. Aperture numbers are universally the same.
Are you sure you're not confusing the aperture ring with the preset ring in those lenses?
They have both (a preset ring and an aperture ring).
You might have your preset ring set to f/16 and the aperture ring set to wide open so this might deceive you.

Hello Orio,

thank you for your fast answer.

The preset ring is on 16 and the aperture ring is on 16,too.
When it is set like this it's wide open on 16.

When I set the preset ring f.e. on the Helios on "2" then it's wide open on aperture 2, but I can't set another aperture than number 2.

It really confuses me.

Is it possible that I mix up the rings?
When I look from the front on the Lens, is the first or the second ring the aperture ring?

I thought it is the second one and the preset ring is the first one (cause it snaps in while the second one is going smooth)

If it is that way... man this is embarrassing...
Sorry for wasting your time...

Hello Rebel,

on my Soligor 180/3.5 pre-set lens, the first ring from the front sets the aperture (with clicks), the second one (nearest the camera body) is for closing the aperture after focusing wide open (no clicks, it´s smooth).

Hope you´re able to figure it out. Take some pictures and you will find which way is wide open.

Heh. It's an easy mistake to make, the first time you pick up a preset lens. We've (mostly) all done it.

That's correct. The one that snaps in is the preset ring, because it pre-sets the minimum aperture value.
The continuous ring is the aperture ring, which moves continuously from wide open to the preset aperture.
