A friend is probably buying my D700 and lenses on Friday, and I'll be able to go over to a Canon 5d mk 2 to use my Contax lenses. I have no Canon lenses, and I have no adapter to use my Contax lenses.
If I want an adapter in the UK, what's the quickest way (I found SRB Griturn have them for £20, but do I need to pay that much for non-AF?). Do I need to be careful to avoid certain adapters? Do any have particular advantages?
Incidentally SRB-Griturn say not to use the adapter on full frame. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance... |

My advice is to buy from Asian sellers, it will took some time for the adapter to arrive but they usually have the latest generation, while European sellers often still have the early adapters which did not work so well.
Recommended sellers are Big_Is and HappypageHK
That of not using adapter on full frame is BS. They probably say so for one of the two reasons:
- their adapter is old and having problems of compatibility with 5D (this is a known problem for old Leica adapters for instance)
- they are afraid that you mount a lens that does not clear the 5D mirror (a Distagon 18 for instance) and that you produce a damage and afterwards blame them, so they find it easier to say not to use at all on full frame. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Thanks Orio. Big_Is seems to have many adapters, but the prices are all different, and I can't see what is different between the adapters. |

This shows the 50mm f1.4 as "iffy" on a 5D. Do you think this applies to the 5Dmk2 too? |

I always used the 1.4/50 on the 5D even before shaving the mirror, and never had problems.
I read that some 5Ds were slightly different and had a problem with it.
It is not my experience.
On my 5DMarkII it works no problem also. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Ask this ebay seller (UK) if he has any - he might have some he's not listed yet.

OK so I now have 2 5d mark II cameras, one on loan, and one I bought. I also have 2 C/Y adapters, one from SRB with no AF chip, one with an AF chip from a guy who previously sold me a lens.
SRB adapter - lens feels loose on the body, infinity focus perfect
Other adapter - lens nice and tight on the body, infinity focus is wrong
But here's something interesting too...
Contax 85mm f2.8 + my 5D + SRB adapter = fine
Contax 85mm f2.8 + my 5D + other adapter = mirror sticks
Contax 85mm f2.8 + loan 5D + SRB adapter = fine
Contax 85mm f2.8 + loan 5D + other adapter = fine
I'm now seriously thinking about getting a better adapter. |
