Dragged it out yesterday and went dandelion hunting. Pah, they don't know how to run away.

100% crop

I'm fricking astonished every time I use this how sharp it is, and this K10D really helps when IS is turned on.

great photo! I like the fact that all the insect is in focus (most of the times, only a part is focused).

Some from yesterday...on rainy NY street.
It's a wonderful lens...

Nice samples. I like the 2nd B+W street scene. It really shows how crisp the lens is.

@ Farside - Really impressed with this shot, the sharpness and colour rendition are simply wonderful.

@ huhging - The first image is a stunner. The intimacy inferred through B&W conversion is really great.

Thanks to both of you.

Thanks...
If you nail the focus, the lens is bitingly sharp even wide open.
Of course, the strength of this lens is more on the bokeh...

Thanks to both of you for the great samples of this sometimes forgotten lens.
Farside
I'm glad you caught the dandelions in a moment of slumber
huhging
Used to live there - brings back a lot of memories. Agree about #2

How did you get the fly to pose? I bet it's a false one - Very Happy

@huhging

Your b/w is very impressive. Do you use split focus screen on your 5dii?

PostPosted: Tue May 05, 2009 5:03 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I owned the sample once. It was very nice like the portrait lens on the 35-mm film:

However I was quite disappointed by its performance on the distance like the tele-lens. So, I sold it out.

I don't like to use split screen, because it forces me to focus and recompose.
I use Bill Maxwell's hi-lux screen, which works wonderfully.

The first shot I took on that B&W series was little bit off-focus, because I was in a hurry to take that moment.

Thank you everyone for nice comments on the pictures.

Thank you huhging, I have to do some googling right now.... Very Happy

[off topic]

I did it. I was searching a screen for my rolleiflex, so I've "met" Max somewhere... Cool

OK, I understand now your Max choice [not spit screen] cause you go for action-street photography.

Dave, I just wanted to say as fairly new owner of the m42 version of this lens, I am loving the performance wide open. Had not attempted any close up Bee shots with it yet, but as soon as it stops raining in sunny Cali I will.

Huhging, the B&W shots are very good... Your conversions are something I can only dream about achieving. The second shot is perfect imo...

Any tips on conversion? I have just started with PSE 7...

PostPosted: Tue May 05, 2009 10:46 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Gus,
Mine did not involve any conversion.
The lens was M42 mount, and I just bought the M42 to EOS Adapter to fit on my Canon body.

Oops....did you mean the conversion to B&W?
I'm actually a very very very novice in PS.
I just desaturated the image in CS4 on image>adjustment menu.

I am blown away you get that look by just desaturating... I must revist how I am attempting B&W... In fact I need to spend some more time just playing with conversions...

That shot of the two walking down the street really does it for me... don't ask me why

May I suggest a different framing for the first one? Makes it look more expressive to me...

Ι like both.

First one. a couple in love in the crowd.

Second one, a couple in love and a man with umbrella.

PostPosted: Wed May 06, 2009 1:20 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I prefer the original as it has an umbrella theme.

PostPosted: Wed May 06, 2009 1:21 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I think, the first one is a sophisticated example of desicive moment street photography.

The second one is more likely a consept gives an isolated moment in public. A bit more stylized i mean...

Anyway i like both, but preferred the first one.

Since you guys talk about umbrella...

This is not from Tair 11-A, but from Rokkor 58/1.2 wide open...

Just a personal thing but I prefer faces when I shoot street photography.

i really like this one. and it would be deadly boring, if the women on the sidewalk would be a model!

Just to clarify...she was just a passer-by....Very Happy
