Two Meyer Lenses In Real Tests

I had to make some new food shots for my blog and being the set I prepared very very soft looking I wanted to use Meyer lenses for their not-so-tack-sharp rendering and good bokeh.

Here we go with first one, an old (and I mean old, it seems just post-war) Helioplan 40/4.5. I got this lenses fungused but I preferred to keep it and make it clean because I didn't see many of them around. Anyway this shot is wide open:

This other shot has been made with Primoplan 58/1.9, wide open too.

Both the shot confirmed to me that these Meyer lenses are softer than CZJ relatives (Tessar 40/4.5 and Biotar 58/1.8 ) but this is exactly what I wanted, all in all they're good tools to have at hand.

Now I have to write the recipe in my blog (it's "Spuma di Ricotta", it could be translated in english "Whipped Ricotta", more dietetic and delicate than whipped cream and also a bit more tasty to my opinion.)

You guess right. It certainly must be not later than 1949.

Herbert Keppler (late editor of Pop Photo) didn't like the Primoplan at all.

"There are two notable exceptions. The long-discontinued, five-element 58mm f/1.9 Meyer Primoplan, for one, sold in large numbers to bargain-hunting SLR owners, as it was much more affordable than the comparable 58mm f/2 Biotars of the day. (The Primoplan, optically, I'd class as first cousin of the dreadful Ludwig-Dresden Victar.)"

http://keppler.popphoto.com/blog/2006/11/inside_straight.html

But I also have the Primoplan, and it seems quite nice in fact.

Maybe its me or maybe its my camera, but I can't see much if any difference in results among all my 50mm lenses.

Your food shots look perfectly professional, btw.

I hope so ! People are generally very stupid, they can't recognize quality works at least this is my experience with them. We have a graphical studio and we most of the time get contract , because price is low , quality is doesn't matter.

A lens that makes food look so yummy can't be bad. I'm drooling!

Here most clients want both quality and low price Laughing

Anyway a good portfolio book is essential to get some work.

I like both of them - they make me peckish.
In fact, all your food shots do. Smile

At least they want your works, because of your quality. I hope you will get some nice orders soon. How about very colorful fruit shoots ? Those are really eye catching in my opinion.

I love this Primoplan 1.9/58 very much. Mine is 40.5mm version.

PostPosted: Mon Nov 17, 2008 10:39 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Great samples ! what is 40.5 mm ?

PostPosted: Mon Nov 17, 2008 10:45 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Filter size. Both early version of Primoplan and Biotar are using 40.5mm filters.

I'll try my early version black biotar 58 several days later. Should I post them on Gallery or Manual Lens?
